As a cinephile with decades of movie-going experience under my belt, I must say this holiday season has been quite the rollercoaster ride at the box office. The face-off between furry mammals and legendary characters is keeping us on our toes, with “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” maintaining its lead, while “Mufasa” is hot on its heels. It’s a battle reminiscent of the epic struggle between Simba and Scar, only this time, it’s for the top spot at the box office.

The fierce competition among fluffy animals persists at the festive cinema box office, as Paramount’s “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” maintains its dominance on domestic charts. The third installment inspired by video games raked in an additional $12.6 million on Friday, pushing its North American total to a whopping $112 million.

Following a less-than-stellar debut following “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” last weekend, “Mufasa” narrowly missed claiming the number one spot on Friday, bringing in an estimated $12.1 million. The film aims to surpass the $100 million domestic threshold before the end of the weekend and hopes to maintain its momentum well into the New Year. With a production budget of $200 million, directed by Barry Jenkins, “Mufasa” needs strong continued performance, both domestically and internationally, for Disney to conclude the year successfully.

The third installation of Paramount’s “Sonic the Hedgehog” series continues to thrive, having grossed over $100 million in North America within its initial eight days since release. This strong momentum is impressive given that the sequel had a production budget of $122 million and has already lined up a second installment. Now that “Sonic” has been released in most international territories on Christmas Day, it’s vying for global attention alongside “Mufasa”, fighting for the interest of children and families worldwide.

On its opening day following Christmas release, “Nosferatu” directed by Robert Eggers under Focus Features has earned an additional $7 million. Estimates suggest it will reach approximately $39 million throughout the five-day period. This is a significant debut for Focus Features, and even more impressive considering that “Nosferatu” was produced at a higher-than-usual cost of $50 million for this production company. With a considerable investment, this period horror film has garnered positive reviews and become the must-see genre release of the season.

Searchlight Pictures shelled out a considerable sum for “A Complete Unknown,” with production costs estimated between $60 million and $70 million. This Timothée Chalamet-led Bob Dylan biopic earned an additional $3.8 million on Friday, aiming to surpass $23 million in the five-day period. It’s a promising start for a period drama, but “A Complete Unknown” relies on buzz from awards and positive reviews to thrive in cinemas.

This weekend, too, A24’s suspenseful office drama “Babygirl,” featuring Nicole Kidman, raked in $1.3 million on its opening day. Meanwhile, further down the top 10 chart, Amazon MGM’s inspiring boxing film “The Fire Inside,” helmed by Rachel Morrison, collected $650,000 on Friday. Both movies received positive feedback during the autumn film festival circuit.

In fifth place, Universal’s “Wicked” added an additional $6.8 million on Friday. With special sing-along showings available at certain venues, the movie adaptation of the Broadway musical surpassed $400 million in domestic earnings a few days ago and is now the third highest-grossing North American release of 2023. On the other hand, Disney’s “Moana 2” took in an estimated $6 million on Friday. Following its domestic earnings reaching $375 million earlier this week, it’s only a short sail to the $400 million mark.
