As a seasoned movie buff with over three decades of industry insights under my belt, I must say this Justin Baldoni scandal is a real game-changer. It seems that every time I think I’ve seen it all, Hollywood manages to surprise me yet again!

On Tuesday, Justin Baldoni’s ex-publicist filed a lawsuit against him, his business, and the present public relations team, as a controversy surrounding accusations of a defamatory campaign against Blake Lively, who starred alongside Baldoni in “It Ends With Us,” escalated.

Steph Jones, proprietor of Jonesworks, alleged that Baldoni violated their agreement, specifying regular payments of $25,000 per month from him. Baldoni parted ways with the agency in August, just a few months into a year-long partnership, following the departure of Jennifer Abel, his Jonesworks publicist, who decided to establish her own public relations firm.

Jones further filed lawsuits against Abel and PR representative Melissa Nathan, claiming they orchestrated a secret smear operation against Lively without her awareness. She asserts that they’re now attempting to shift the blame for the subsequent chaos onto her.

Even as their own wrongdoings are being exposed, Abel and Nathan persistently accuse Jones, tarnishing his reputation within the industry, according to the court documents,” could be a paraphrased version of the given sentence.

On Saturday, Lively lodged a grievance with the California Civil Rights Authority, alleging that Baldoni and his representatives deliberately instigated unfavorable news articles about her as a form of retribution for her reports of on-set sexual misconduct.

In the lawsuit, Lively claimed Baldoni made a series of sexually suggestive remarks and actions that supposedly happened on set in 2023. As stated in the lawsuit, she brought these concerns to his attention through her lawyers prior to filming, which had been paused during the Hollywood strikes but started again earlier this year.

It was during the promotional tour for their movie last summer when the tension between Baldoni and Lively became noticeable. Baldoni grew concerned that Lively or her representatives might publicly accuse him of inappropriate behavior, so he looked for strategies to prevent such an allegation. The accusation, as detailed in the complaint, was based on text messages exchanged within Baldoni’s publicity team, where they discussed attempting to discredit Lively.

In an uncommon step, Lively’s legal team acquired the messages through a pre-lawsuit subpoena directed at Jones.

Attorneys Bryan Freedman, representing Abel, Nathan, and Baldoni, warned Jones on Monday that they might take legal action due to the disclosure of Abel’s phone contents to Lively’s legal team. Freedman, along with Abel and Nathan, declined to comment when asked about Jones’ lawsuit.

In her legal case, Jones claims that she “took care to secure” or “ensured the integrity of” Abel’s business phone following his termination.

“During Abel’s termination, evidence of secret attacks and negative campaigns against her by Abel and Nathan were found on a company phone. This phone was then examined by Jonesworks after they received a subpoena for its contents. The investigation revealed that Abel was urging other Jonesworks clients and employees to leave the company while still employed there, as shown in these records.” – Jones’ lawsuit claims.

As a dedicated movie enthusiast, I find myself compelled to express my personal grievances. For months, I’ve suspected that Abel had been hatching a scheme to depart from my company and poach my clients. Worse still, he allegedly sought to tarnish my industry reputation in the process. To make matters even more disheartening, it appears Nathan may have instigated this betrayal. His motive? Gain unhindered access to those very same clients if Abel were to leave.

According to the legal document submitted to a court in New York, it’s alleged that this plan caused significant harm to both Jones and Jonesworks.

In addition to other claims, the lawsuit asserts that Abel and Nathan are said to have spread unfavorable articles about Jones in various publications, such as one piece published in Business Insider during the previous summer.

As a passionate cinephile, I find myself compelled to address an issue that has arisen in my beloved film industry. It seems there’s a dispute involving a breach of our shared agreement, a violation of trust, interference with the sanctity of contracts, and an act of defamation. The essence of this situation is complex, but the core principle at stake remains the same: respect for the commitments we make to each other in the realm of cinema.
