As a seasoned movie-goer with decades of cinema-watching under my belt, I must say that the Chinese box office scene is as dynamic and vibrant as ever. The latest Disney release, “Mufasa: The Lion King,” has taken the top spot, showcasing the enduring appeal of timeless stories.
Disney’s movie “Mufasa: The Lion King” took first place at the Chinese box office, dethroning “Her Story” after a four-week run as number one.
According to data from the consulting firm Artisan Gateway, “Mufasa: The Lion King” earned approximately RMB56.1 million (around $8 million) in its box office run.
Ranking second, Donnie Yen’s Hong Kong action-drama “The Prosecutor” from Maoyan Pictures grossed $7.1 million, bringing its total earnings in the Mainland to $18 million. In this movie, action legend Donnie Yen portrays Fok Chi Ho, a former elite police special forces officer who switches careers and becomes a prosecutor. His character, Fok, is assigned to investigate the case of Ma Ka Kit (upcoming star Mason Fung), a young man facing drug trafficking charges who seems to be in a difficult situation. Pressured into accepting a plea bargain, Ma receives a severe sentence. However, driven by his gut feelings, Fok starts digging deeper into the case, revealing a complex web of conspiracy that spans Hong Kong’s criminal network and its influential figures.
The “Jason Zhang Brilliance Tour” concert movie, produced by Shanghai Jiwu Culture, made its debut and earned a staggering $5.7 million in its third position.
In fourth place, “The Last Dance” by Emperor Motion Pictures earned $5.1 million, adding up to a grand total of $18.5 million. This film is helmed by emerging Hong Kong director Anselm Chan and tells the story of a struggling former wedding planner and a rigid old Taoist priest, who find themselves in an unexpected partnership in the funeral business. The movie features a top-tier cast led by comedy legends Dayo Wong (“Table for Six”) and Michael Hui (“Security Unlimited,” “Where the Wind Blows”).
As a devoted cinephile, I’ve got to share that “Her Story” from Maxtimes Pictures has descended to the fifth spot, raking in $4 million, bringing its grand total to a whopping $96.6 million. This masterpiece is the brainchild of Shao Yihui, who also gave us “B For Busy” in 2021. The narrative races along at a thrilling pace, centering around two women – one, a recently jobless single mom, and the other, a seemingly serene new neighbor with hidden troubles. Their friendship blossoms as they navigate through a series of intricate relationship hurdles, dealing with an abusive ex-husband, and exploring fresh romantic prospects.
Over the weekend, the nationwide box office earnings amounted to $36.9 million. So far this year, the cumulative total has reached $5.8 billion. However, this figure is still 21.5% lower than what was recorded at the same time in 2023.
