As a movie critic who has had the privilege of witnessing the emergence and growth of many talented artists in the industry, I am deeply saddened by the untimely demise of Aziza “Z” Barnes. At just 32 years old, Barnes left an indelible mark on the world of television and poetry, a testament to their immense talent and potential that was unfortunately cut short.
It is with sadness that we report the passing of Aziza “Z” Barnes, a talented poet and scriptwriter known for her work on the FX series “Snowfall” and Netflix’s “Teenage Bounty Hunters”. At just 32 years old, her life was tragically cut short.
It was officially announced through a representative that Barnes took his own life on December 15th. No additional information has been disclosed.
It is with great sorrow that we announce the death of a remarkable and cherished artist, Aziza ‘Z’ Barnes, who was also a child, sibling, and friend to many. Z has left an indelible mark on countless lives within their community and field, and will be dearly missed and forever loved by those lucky enough to have known them and their work. An exceptional talent beyond compare, we seek solace in Z’s artistry during this time of grief and extend our sympathies for those who are struggling with this loss.
Originally hailing from Los Angeles, Barnes attained a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) at New York University and was working towards a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) at the University of Mississippi. Additionally, Barnes excelled as a poet, holding positions as both a Callaloo Fellow and a Poet’s House Fellow.
Safia Elhillo, a long-standing companion of Barnes, penned a tribute on Substack, expressing that they were an exceptionally talented author and a trailblazer who defied genre conventions, but passed away prematurely, leaving behind a vast community in mourning. Elhillo proceeded to share a poem by Barnes titled “Eulogy for Her,” which she has valued since their childhood days.
Among their various projects, they are also involved with the “Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” spin-off from “Game of Thrones,” scheduled for release in 2025, as well as the hip-hop drama titled “Rap Shit,” starring Max.
