As a lifelong football fan who has seen the Madden curse claim its fair share of victims over the years, I can’t help but respect Ja’Marr Chase’s decision to pass on gracing the cover of next year’s Madden NFL edition. Having witnessed the careers of Christian McCaffrey and others take a hit after being immortalized in pixelated form, it’s refreshing to see a player prioritizing his health over the lure of video game stardom.

It appears Electronic Arts may have one less potential cover star for next year’s edition of Madden NFL, as Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase has stated during a press conference that he prefers not to feature on the game’s cover, seemingly mindful of the Madden Curse.

As a gamer myself, I recently came across a clip shared by Bengals columnist Mike Petraglia featuring Chase, our star wide receiver. While he’s certainly skilled enough to grace the cover of Madden, Chase made it clear that he’s not interested in being the game’s cover athlete. When asked about the opportunity, the NFL’s leading receiver in catches, yards, and touchdowns simply said: “Nah, I don’t want that [knocking on wood]. No.

Ja’Marr Chase was reminiscing about vintage video football games like Madden, but when the topic turned to potential cover appearances, he swiftly declined, saying “Absolutely not!” or “I don’t want that.

In response to being asked about the Madden curse, Chase chose not to comment directly on the matter. Interestingly, he expressed interest in appearing on a revived NFL Street game cover. A review of Madden cover stars from 2000-24 revealed that nearly six out of ten players experienced what is known as the “curse,” characterized by injuries or performance declines. However, it’s worth noting that only one quarter of the more recent cover stars (from the past decade) have faced this so-called curse.

Following an early-season injury to star player Christian McCaffrey in Madden NFL 25, it now seems likely that he will be sidelined for the remainder of this season as well. Notably, McCaffrey has a track record of injuries throughout his career, with multiple seasons where he’s been unable to play more than half of the games.

In the year 2020, TopMob examined the infamous curse that had been hanging over Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes as he was gearing up for the Super Bowl. Despite being featured on Madden NFL 20’s cover, a game often associated with jinxes, Mahomes went on to clinch the championship, effectively puncturing the curse.
