As a seasoned gamer who has navigated countless virtual worlds and faced numerous digital challenges, I find myself often drawing parallels between my gaming adventures and real-life experiences. The tale of Chris Columbus and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation is no exception.
Prior to directing Home Alone, Mrs. Doubtfire, and Harry Potter, Chris Columbus was initially slated to direct another box office hit – a Christmas movie starring Chevy Chase. The film in question is none other than the classic holiday viewing, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, which has become an essential watch during every Christmas season.
The film director departed the production following the completion of the opening, secondary footage for the film. One might wonder what prompted such an unexpected move. It seems this decision had a direct link with the star of “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.” Columbus admitted that after encountering Chase, despite being in dire need of employment, he chose to leave the project, stating that the actor was downright uncooperative.
Columbus shared his story about National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation during a recent interview with Empire Magazine (via Screenrant).
In a similar representation, I shared the same talent representative as you, and John Hughes sent me the script for “Christmas Vacation”. I found it quite humorous. I even took some preliminary establishing shots for the movie, which are visible in the final film. Following this, I had an encounter with Chevy Chase. As you might have heard numerous times before, he turned out to be extremely rude. Despite being in a critical job-seeking phase, I chose to withdraw from the project. A fortnight later, I received two more scripts from John Hughes. One was titled “Reach The Rock”, which I didn’t give any feedback on. The other was “Home Alone”.
Despite the potential downside of abandoning the film “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation,” Chris Columbus didn’t suffer any harm in the long run. This is because, shortly after, he got hold of the script for “Home Alone,” a project that ultimately turned out to be a massive success.
And Columbus’ place in the film with Chevy Chase was taken by Jeremiah S. Chechik.
