Paramount Pictures is getting ready to launch “Sonic the Hedgehog 4,” with the company planning to debut this new installment of the popular, family-friendly series around springtime in 2027.
The release of “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” hits cinemas this Friday, with predictions it will lead the box office earning between $55 million and $60 million across 3,800 North American theaters. This sequel appears poised to be a successful holiday season film for Paramount, sparking enthusiasm for future “Sonic” projects. Globally, the movie will debut in 52 markets on Christmas. Critics have been favorable towards the newest installment, awarding it an impressive 87% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The first two Sonic the Hedgehog movies have amassed a collective worldwide box office income of $725.2 million and generated over $180 million through global sales of home entertainment rentals and digital purchases. Moreover, these films sparked a spinoff series on Paramount+ called “Knuckles,” which debuted earlier this year. Notably, the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise originated from Sega video games, making its first appearance in 1991.
Jeff Fowler has been in charge of every “Sonic the Hedgehog” movie, including the upcoming third one. In this installment, Jim Carrey once again takes on the role of Dr. Ivo Robotnik, Sonic’s primary adversary, and Ben Schwartz continues as the title character, Sonic. For part three, Carrey assumes a double role, also portraying Ivo’s grandfather, Gerald Robotnik. Alongside James Marsden, Idris Elba, Colleen O’Shaughnessey, and a new addition, Keanu Reeves as Shadow the Hedgehog, another beloved character from the video games.
