Oh boy, if I were a Jets fan, I’d be shaking my head in disbelief right now. As someone who has lived through countless seasons of mediocrity and disappointment, this story just adds fuel to the fire. The thought that we could have had Jerry Jeudy, a potential game-changer on offense, and it all came down to a video game rating is just absurd!
The 2024 season for the New York Jets has been disappointing, even though they boast plenty of skilled players who should be steering them to victories. Interestingly enough, they could have had another promising offensive player on their roster in Cleveland Browns wide receiver Jerry Jeudy, but they chose not to complete a trade for him during the offseason for a seemingly incomprehensible reason.
In March, the Denver Broncos traded Jerry Jeudy to the Cleveland Browns for a fifth-round and sixth-round draft pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Initially, it seemed that the New York Jets were on the verge of acquiring Jeudy instead of the Browns, but the deal fell through due to Woody Johnson, the Jets’ owner, considering Jeudy’s rating in the Madden video game series insufficient.
In a potential deal between Douglas and George Paton of the Broncos, it appeared that Courtland Sutton (Jeudy in this context) was set to join the Jets, with Aaron Rodgers gaining another prospective playmaker. However, the Broncos were taken aback when the negotiations suddenly collapsed. The shocking cause? According to multiple league sources as reported by Zack Rosenblatt, Dianna Russini, and Michael Silver of The Athletic, it turned out that the team owner felt Jeudy’s rating in the popular video game “Madden NFL” was insufficiently high, and Johnson (presumably a team executive) didn’t want to proceed with the trade for this reason.
Jets surely wished they would have traded for Jerry Jeudy
Indeed, you’ve understood it right. Johnson declined a trade for Jeudy because he felt that his rating in “Madden 24” was insufficient. Regrettably for New York, another offensive tool could have been beneficial, as Jeudy has since had an outstanding season with the Browns. In 14 games so far, Jeudy has achieved a personal best of 70 receptions for 1,052 yards and four touchdowns.
With Garrett Wilson and Davante Adams on their team, New York’s offense should be more than capable of thriving. However, they missed out on a potential standout player who might have formed an arguably unbeatable trio of wide receivers in the league. Now, as the 2024 season winds down, the Jets are left pondering what might have been.
