As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming under my belt, I must say that Ben Schwartz’s choice of Frog from Chrono Trigger as his favorite video game character truly resonates with me. I remember playing Chrono Trigger back in the day and being utterly captivated by its intricate storyline, memorable characters, and timeless music.

This week, Ben Schwartz will once again voice Sonic in the upcoming movie Sonic the Hedgehog 3. He started playing this role since the first Sonic the Hedgehog film in 2020. However, when asked about his favorite video game character ever, Schwartz didn’t select Sega’s iconic blue hedgehog. Instead, he opted for a secondary character from Square Enix’s 1995 RPG, Chrono Trigger.

During an interview with IGN, Schwartz named Frog from Chrono Trigger as his preferred anthropomorphic hero. He fondly remembered Frog’s enormous broadsword as one of the most awesome things ever. Furthermore, Schwartz expressed that Chrono Trigger was his all-time favorite video game.

Schwartz remembered the game as exceptionally captivating, with an exceptional soundtrack and narrative. Every character stood out distinctly; unlike other Final Fantasy games where some characters seem interchangeable for leveling up, each character in Chrono Trigger drew emotional attachment,” said Schwartz.

2021 saw Schwartz commend Roger Craig Smith, the previous voice actor of Sonic, while disclosing he wasn’t asked to assume the role in the games. Instead, Keanu Reeves, Schwartz’s co-star from Sonic 3, voices his character, Shadow, in the recently launched DLC for Sonic x Shadow Generations, which is part of the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Movie Pack. Jeff Fowler, the director of Sonic 3, hinted that Reeves was dedicated to studying Shadow’s character before he portrayed him in the movie.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will be out in theaters on Friday, December 20.
