As a die-hard fan of superhero movies, I must say that the upcoming “Superman” film has me genuinely excited and hopeful. Having grown up watching Christopher Reeve’s portrayal of Superman on the big screen, I can appreciate the significance of this iconic character.
“Home. Take me home.”
There is a remarkable amount of symbolism packed into these words, the only ones spoken by the titular Man of Steel in the first teaser trailer for “Superman.” The footage premiered Thursday following a press preview on Dec. 17, introduced by writer and director James Gunn. The filmmaker has said for two years now that this movie will formally launch the new DC Universe that he and fellow DC Studios co-chief Peter Safran have been tasked with leading. But as the teaser makes abundantly clear, this Superman — as played by relative newcomer David Corenswet (“Hollywood,” “Twisters”) — will debut for the first time into a cinematic universe inhabited by the full spectrum of DC Comics characters. Superman is, in effect, coming home to DC.
As I eagerly delve into the captivating trailer for this upcoming Superman film, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement upon seeing Tyler Corenswet gracefully embody the spectacled alter ego, Clark Kent – a reporter at Metropolis’ esteemed newspaper, The Daily Planet. The brief glimpses we get of Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Clark’s beloved colleague and Superman’s paramour, are both tantalizing and intriguing, showcasing their camaraderie at the Daily Planet as well as their shared adventures with the Man of Steel.
In this groundbreaking live-action superhero film, I’m thrilled to introduce a newcomer – Krypto the Superdog, the energetic canine companion of the Last Son of Krypton. After a crash landing in the arctic ice, it’s Krypto who comes to Superman’s aid when he’s battered and exhausted. Additionally, we get a sneak peek at several other DC heroes making their big screen debut. Among them are Edi Gathegi portraying Mister Terrific, enclosed within an indestructible sphere; Nathan Fillion as the determined and seemingly unfriendly Green Lantern corps member, Guy Gardner; Isabela Merced, who brings Hawkgirl to life with her wings; and Anthony Corrigan as the unique-looking Metamorpho.
According to Gunn’s explanation during the Q&A session after the press preview on the Warner Bros. lot, the teaser aims to convey that this version of Superman coexists within a world filled with superheroes.
As a passionate cinephile, I can’t help but express my excitement about the upcoming Superman movies. Unlike previous adaptations that focused solely on the hero without delving into his expansive universe, these new productions are going all-in with the rich Superman mythology. We’re not just getting the Man of Steel; we’re also seeing him interact with other superheroes, some he gets along with splendidly, others not so much. This time around, we’ll witness elements from the comics that have been underrepresented in film, and hopefully, in a relatable way – something I believe we’ve managed to achieve.
Gunn explained that his DC Universe bears similarities to “Game of Thrones” and the Marvel Universe, in that he intends for it to portray a realistic, well-developed world with an integration of magical aspects.
Here are some more revelations from the extended Q&A with Gunn, Corenswet, Brosnahan and Hoult.
Yes, That’s an Electric Guitar Playing John Williams’ Classic ‘Superman’ Theme, but the Movie Will Have Original Music Too
In his own words, Gunn pondered over whether to integrate the iconic main theme from the 1978 “Superman” movie, composed by John Williams, into his work. He eventually concluded that the melody is so deeply tied to the Superman character that it was essential to find a way to incorporate it – much like the electric guitar riff used in the teaser trailers.
“That was one of my favorite soundtracks of all time,” he said.
The director addressed John Murphy, the musician behind the scores for Gunn’s 2021 DC movie “The Suicide Squad” and his 2023 Marvel film “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.” He stated, “‘I’d like to utilize a rendition of the Williams theme,’ I told him, ‘but I want us to create our unique interpretation of it.’ This comment sparked a series of other compositions, some of which echo the original Williams theme, while others are entirely John Murphy’s innovative work.
From the outset, the director introduced Murphy to the project – an uncommon move for film composers at such an early stage. He shared initial drafts of the screenplay with Murphy approximately two years prior. Later on, during filming, Gunn tested some of Murphy’s early attempts at a score on set. As he put it, “It’s about striking the right balance between innovation and tradition.
The Movie Will Embrace the Innate Goodness of Superman
On several occasions throughout the Q&A, Gunn repeatedly emphasized that the heart of the movie was centered around the theme of goodness, expressing his belief that the world could greatly benefit from such a narrative that endorses it.
He mentioned that at the start, Superman appears damaged, reflecting the state of our nation. He believes in the inherent goodness of people, regardless of their political views or ideologies. Most Americans, he feels, are simply trying to do what’s right and be good citizens. This movie symbolizes this idea, focusing on the fundamental decency of humanity, which is often perceived as outdated or under attack by some powerful, negative voices.
After the Q&A, Gunn elaborated on that theme while talking with EbMaster.
He expressed his eagerness for others to understand the heart of our work, as it has been a hidden treasure among us. We’ve cherished this secret, and we felt proud of it, not just because it was good quality, but also because it wasn’t some authoritarian power play.
He continued, “I’m not implying that other superhero movies are the same,” he clarified, sensing potential backlash from dedicated fans of Zack Snyder’s DC films, which have received criticism for promoting, in essence, fascistic power fantasies. “However, this film was more about showcasing a character’s kindness.
The Actors Developed Their Own Approaches to Their Iconic Characters
During the Q&A session, when discussing Superman facing off against Lex Luthor, Corenswet hesitated, as if on the verge of revealing something confidential. He then admitted, with a laugh, “This is my debut project where I need to be particularly cautious about spoilers.” However, despite this caution, each actor did offer some intriguing insights into their portrayals of their characters.
Corenswet found himself most resonating with his character’s portrayal of Superman’s belief in humanity’s inherent goodness. As he confided, “I was always left out of the drama during school, never privy to the exciting gossip circulating around me. For this reason, I have always seen people as their best selves; not in a simplistic way, but rather with an understanding that ignores minor flaws and petty squabbles. Many perceive Superman as naive, yet his blindness to these trivial aspects is simply a focus on the positive and hopeful.
For inspiration on Superman’s physicality, Corenswet looked primarily to his tall and muscular brother-in-law, who stands at 6 feet 8 inches and weighs 270 pounds, possesses a booming voice, often gets in the way, and strives not to be noticed. However, it wasn’t until he collaborated with his fellow actors, particularly Brosnahan and Hoult, that he became clear about who Clark was and who Superman was within himself.
For Brosnahan, the character of Lois Lane adapts to embody the essence of a brave journalist that each era or decade demands. Thus, she considered what it would entail for Lois to inhabit a world where print journalism might be on the verge of extinction, given that she has devoted her entire existence to this profession.
In both her work and her personality, she’s always questioning things, peering around every bend,” I noted. “That’s how she approaches life.
In the portrayal of Michael Hoult’s Metropolis tycoon, there are distinct similarities to Lex Luthor’s traditional traits. He’s portrayed as cunning and relentless, often needing to outsmart Superman in certain aspects because he can’t surpass him in others. However, there’s also a layer to this character, as Hoult sees it, where even though his methods might not align with our values, we can comprehend why he advocates for his ideology and perhaps believe that it could be beneficial for humanity.
Superman’s Suit Was Designed to Look Very Different from Past Superhero Costumes — But It Still Brought a Smile to Everyone’s Faces
According to Gunn, refining his design for Superman’s suit required a prolonged period of development. However, he made it plain from the outset what he intended the suit to avoid resembling.
He mentioned that he didn’t want the design to appear as if it was wet or overly exaggerated with fake muscles. Additionally, he expressed his disinterest in having airbrushed abs included in the design.
In his own words, Corenswet mentioned that since there were numerous variations of every detail of the costume, he never had a single instance where he donned it for the initial time. Instead, he was given the opportunity to witness how others perceived him in the completed version of the suit for the first time.
He expressed that he wasn’t feeling as powerful as Superman, but it was incredibly awe-inspiring to watch his fellow actors and the production team. Essentially, he was able to observe their reactions to the event.
Later on, Hoult shared his perspective of that encounter. “When I beheld David dressed up, I was utterly spellbound,” the actor expressed. “It’s a bit embarrassing to confess, but it gave me a warm and fuzzy feeling. There was one instance where he swooped onto the set, and I couldn’t help but secretly smile. And when I glanced around the room, everyone else had the same admiring expression watching him.
“And then the best thing is seeing kids see it,” Corenswet added. “There’s just nothing like it.”
In a similar vein, Gunn shared a tale, which he’s recounted in various forms before, about his dissatisfaction with Corenswet’s costume fitting. “David said, ‘Well, he’s an alien from outer space, powerful beyond measure, yet not to scare children.’ This resonated with me then and it does now. That sums up who he is.
“Superman” will open in theaters on July 11. Watch the trailer below.
