FESTIVAL FLOURISHES
As a seasoned movie connoisseur with roots deeply entrenched in the vibrant Indian cinematic landscape, I must say that the upcoming Red Lorry Film Festival promises to be a visual feast for cinephiles like me! The festival’s expansion to Hyderabad and its impressive lineup, featuring films from various corners of the globe, is a testament to the growing appetite for international cinema among Indian audiences.
The second edition of BookMyShow‘s Red Lorry Film Festival, happening from March 21st to 23rd in Mumbai and Hyderabad, has secured two films that were shortlisted for the Academy Awards as its main attractions. “Hollywoodgate,” produced by the team behind “Navalny,” which is up for Best Documentary Feature, delves into the realities of Kabul under Taliban rule. On the other hand, “Universal Language,” competing in the International Feature category, brings an absurd comedy-drama that intertwines various narratives between Tehran and Winnipeg.
The festival will display more than 120 films in both cities, a growth spurt symbolized by “Red Lorry Film Festival: Parallel Universe” happening simultaneously with Mumbai’s “Take 2” edition. Notable picks include “When The Light Breaks,” which debuted in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes 2024, and “999: The Forgotten Girls,” winner of the Miami Jewish Film Festival’s audience choice award.
2025 marks the debut of a competition segment at the festival open to filmmakers worldwide. Entries must be submitted by January 7th. The programming caters to various languages such as Spanish, French, German, Korean, Dutch, and Icelandic. Ashish Saksena, COO of BookMyShow, attributes the initial edition’s success as the driving force behind this expansion, highlighting the increasing interest among Indian viewers for international cinema.
PRISON PREMIERE
The “Black Warrant” series, a gripping drama about prisons, will debut on Netflix on January 10th. This show is set within Tihar, Asia’s biggest prison, and follows the journey of new prison guard Sunil Kumar Gupta as he maneuvers through the intricate power structures of this institution.
The series introduces actor Zahan Kapoor in his first streaming role as Gupta, joining a cast that includes Rahul Bhat, Paramvir Singh Cheema, Anurag Thakar, and Sidhant Gupta. This production brings Netflix back together with creator-showrunner Vikramaditya Motwane (“AK vs AK”), who shares directing duties with Satyanshu Singh, Ambiecka Pandit, Arkesh Ajay, and Rohin Raveendran Nair.
The series is adapted from the real-life account book “Black Warrant: Confessions Of A Tihar Jailer” written by Sunil Gupta, a former superintendent of Tihar, and Sunetra Choudhury, a journalist. Applause Entertainment is responsible for its production, with Motwane’s Andolan Production and Confluence Media contributing to it.
The program is now part of Netflix India’s latest lineup, which also includes “Heeramandi: The Diamond Market,” “Amar Singh Chamkila,” “The Great Indian Kapil Show,” “IC 814: The Kandahar Hostage Crisis,” and “CTRL.
