As a cinephile who’s been following Survivor since its inception, I must say that last night’s finale was a rollercoaster ride of emotions. The final four was set, and we were all on the edge of our seats, hoping for an unexpected twist. However, the outcome was predictable, much like the plot of a B-grade horror movie where the protagonist always seems to make the wrong decision.
heads up: The following discussion reveals key events from the Season 47 finale of “Survivor,” titled “The Last Stand,” broadcasted on Wednesday, December 18, on CBS. Please proceed with caution if you haven’t watched it yet!
The 47th season of ‘Survivor’ concluded on Wednesday evening, though it might have been somewhat foreseeable for regular viewers.
Initially, Rachel LaMont, Sam Phalen, Sue Smey, and Teeny Chirichillo faced the last immunity challenge as the final four contestants. Although Sam initially led, he couldn’t claim his first victory in this round, allowing Rachel to secure her fourth individual immunity win of the season. This achievement places her among an elite group of five women over 46 seasons who have achieved this feat. While Rachel felt proud to join Jenna Morasca, Chrissy Hofbeck, Kim Spradlin-Wolfe, and Kelly Wiglesworth in this exclusive club, she acknowledged that Kelly and Chrissy had reached the finale but didn’t ultimately win.
Initially, Rachel disclosed that she intended to take Sue with her to the final round, thereby leaving Sam and Teeny in a predicament where they would have to create fire. Interestingly, Sam hadn’t honed his fire-making skills throughout the season, whereas Teeny was competent at it. Furthermore, Rachel had been encouraging Teeny to boost her self-assurance.
Prior to the fire-making contest, Teeny openly acknowledged a somewhat lopsided rivalry with Sam throughout the season. This was largely due to her personal struggles with self-identity. She explained that Sam’s good looks made her believe he might have been treated differently in certain situations, while her own identity and gender haven’t always given her similar experiences. Teeny admitted she is still addressing these issues and confessed that she has, at times, transferred her insecurities onto Sam.
In a fiercely competitive fire-starting contest, Teeny took an impressive early advantage, constructing a massive blaze before Sam managed to ignite a single spark. Yet, Sam’s unyielding determination and the unusual direction of the wind worked in his favor. As his spark grew stronger, it swiftly consumed the tinder string before Teeny’s fire could fully catch on. Heartbroken, she was eliminated and sent to the jury.
During the closing conversation with the jury, Sue disclosed that it was her 59th birthday – a fact she had shared with the group from the start, contrary to the assumption that she was in her 40s, which she wasn’t. Nonetheless, Sam and Rachel continued to lead most of the subsequent discussions.
In the final analysis, just like during the latter part of the season, Rachel stood out and claimed victory!
