As an avid gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I must say that the latest news about Far Cry’s evolution has piqued my interest significantly. The shift from the traditional open-world formula and the move to new engines promises a fresh take on a series I hold dear.

According to reports, Ubisoft aims to deviate from the traditional open-world approach that’s characteristic of the Far Cry series in the upcoming installments.

Insider Gaming reports that there are currently two upcoming Far Cry titles: a primary game known as Blackbird and an offshoot titled Maverick which is focused on extraction shooter gameplay. It’s also been suggested that Ubisoft may be transitioning to the Snowdrop engine, previously used for games like The Division, instead of their usual Dunia engine for the Far Cry series.

In Maverick, it seems that participants are set in the harsh Alaskan wilderness, where they must battle against other players, wildlife, and the unforgiving weather. On the other hand, Blackbird appears to focus on a protagonist’s mission to save his family from a cult. Interestingly, players are given 24 real-life hours, which equates to 72 in-game hours, to carry out this rescue operation. A wristwatch on the character serves as a countdown timer for this time limit.

It’s said that the two games share similar movement features like tactical running, sliding, and jumping, as they were initially part of the same game known as Talisker. Inside Ubisoft, they have reportedly delayed the launch dates of these games from 2025 to 2026 because of development challenges.

Currently, Ubisoft is facing a challenging situation. The Guillemot family, the founders, are said to be working towards maintaining control of the company while also considering offers for sale from entities like Tencent. Additionally, Ubisoft has disclosed that they will be closing XDefiant, their Call of Duty rival, in June 2025. However, they remain committed to investing resources into their live-service games.
