As a seasoned movie buff with decades of watching and analyzing shows under my belt, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment at the cancellation of “Girls5Eva”. Having grown fond of its fast-paced humor, catchy original songs, and the dynamic performances of its talented cast, I was eagerly anticipating more episodes.
The series “Girls5Eva” won’t continue anymore. After running for three seasons, it has been taken off the air a second time – this time, by Netflix.
Initially, the first two music-comedy seasons were available on Peacock from 2021 to 2022. However, when Peacock chose not to continue the show, Netflix stepped in and revived it for a third season, which premiered in March 2024.
Meredith Scardino created, while Tina Fey produced it, this comedy centered around a ’90s girl band who reconnect and strive to restart their careers after an unforeseen opportunity presents itself. The series featured Sara Bareilles, Busy Philipps, Paula Pell, and Renée Elise Goldsberry, earning praise for its quick wit and original, satirical songs.
Despite high anticipation, the show didn’t gain traction as predicted on Netflix. One possible explanation for this, as pointed out by TV Editor Michael Schneider, is that the title itself might not have been captivating enough to entice viewers who quickly skim through titles without grasping the context of a particular show.
Phillips announced on her “Doing Her Best” podcast that the series has been cancelled. She candidly stated, “It’s over. Yes, I’m saying it because, why not? If Netflix won’t do it, I will. It seems like not enough people watched it or perhaps they didn’t watch it in a way that mattered, or maybe I don’t know the reason. To be honest, I just don’t know.
As a passionate film enthusiast, I must admit, Netflix has been rather tight-lipped regarding the specifics of the deal’s structure when the second season moved to Peacock. Moreover, they haven’t explicitly confirmed that the move is finalized yet either.
She went on to say, ‘There’s still time. I truly believe it will never completely fade away. The characters are just too captivating.’ She had also playfully suggested ideas to the cast such as performing at Radio City Music Hall or transforming it into a live stage production, perhaps even a musical, and maybe someday on Broadway.
She too expressed her thoughts about the title, implying that it might have contributed to some issues. “I find the title ‘Girls5Eva’ fantastic and spot-on, but I wonder if it could potentially exclude men – specifically straight males. Has anyone ever conducted a study on how female-centric show titles impact their success?
