A fresh sneak peek has been revealed for “Queen of the Ring,” directed and penned by Ash Avildsen, showcasing “Arrow” actress Emily Bett Rickards in her portrayal of the famed professional wrestler Mildred Burke.
The real-life story unfolds around Burke, who overcomes extraordinary obstacles to emerge as the first female millionaire athlete and the longest-reigning champion in wrestling, an era when the sport was generally prohibited throughout much of America.
Regardless of her achievements spanning the 1940s and 1950s, Burke’s life story is characterized by personal hardships such as singlehandedly raising her son while traveling, the heartbreaking loss of her wrestling protege in the ring, and a stormy relationship with her manager and former spouse, Billy Wolfe (portrayed by Lucas).
The movie draws its inspiration from Jeff Leen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, “The Queen of the Ring: A Tale of Sex, Muscles, Diamonds, and the Forging of a Legendary American Figure.” (Note that this version maintains the original structure but simplifies some phrases for easier reading.)
In addition to Josh Lucas (“Sweet Home Alabama”), Walton Goggins (“The Hateful Eight”), Gavin Casalegno (from “The Summer I Turned Pretty”), Tyler Posey (“Teen Wolf”), Francesca Eastwood (“Juror No. 2”), Deborah Ann Woll (“Daredevil”), Cara Buono (“Stranger Things”), Marie Avgeropoulos (“The 100”), Kelli Berglund (“Heels”), Adam Demos (“Sex/Life”), Martin Kove (“Cobra Kai”), and Damaris Lewis (“BlacKkKlansman”), there are several other stars involved.
In this production team, Aimee Schoof (producer), Isen Robbins (producer), B.D. Gunnel (producer) are the main creators. Meanwhile, Kelly Koep, Jeff Leen, Jim Ross, and Anthony Mastromauro serve as executive producers.
Speaking about the film “Queen of the Ring”, Avildsen shared, “This project holds immense significance for me, as it encapsulates both my personal and professional evolution. At 34 years old, I had the privilege of meeting my father, renowned director John G. Avildsen, best known for iconic movies like ‘Rocky’ and ‘The Karate Kid’. Establishing a strong bond with him as an adult was truly impactful, shaping my storytelling style and giving my work a sense of meaning and truthfulness. My childhood, marked by the absence of a father, has greatly influenced me, but getting to know him better in adulthood has been nothing short of transformative.
The movie titled “Queen of the Ring” had its first showing at the Newport Beach Film Festival on October 19th. The rights for its distribution are handled by CAA Media Finance.
