As a seasoned cinephile with a penchant for unconventional narratives and compelling performances, I find myself thoroughly intrigued by Maya Erskine‘s journey as Jane Smith in “Mr. & Mrs. Smith.” Her portrayal of an outsider grappling with identity and the complexities of marriage is nothing short of captivating.
Maya Erskine, who received an Emmy nomination for her performance as Jane Smith in Amazon Prime Video’s “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” recently had a chat with Angelique Jackson from EbMaster during a For Your Consideration event. They discussed the special connection she formed with co-star Donald Glover, the preparations she undertook to handle the physical demands of the role, and what attracted her to Jane as a character who stands out from the crowd.
A significant factor contributing to the show’s success and its 16 Emmy nominations was the captivating on-screen relationship between Erskine and Glover. Interestingly, they never had a chemistry reading before they were paired for the roles.
Essentially, he contacted me on FaceTime three times, but I couldn’t understand what he was saying,” Erskine reminisced. “He wasn’t being clear with me, he wasn’t engaging in conversation. He was trying to gauge my personality and that seemed to be his method of determining if there was any kind of connection between us.
It was primarily the central theme of arranged marriage that attracted Erskine to portraying Jane Smith and agreeing to the series.
Erskine found the theme of the story captivating: “It was a unique blend of marriage and espionage, offering both dramatic Bond-like scenes and intricate portrayals of a relationship. This combination was particularly thrilling for me because I hadn’t seen it before, especially in the character of Jane. She resonated with me as someone who often feels like an outsider in life, struggling to find her place and seeking validation through her identity. I believe many people can relate to that experience.
Just as with other adaptations of the “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” tale, this series is packed with high-octane action scenes. To ensure he could convincingly portray Jane’s physical prowess and execute stunts, Erskine underwent extensive training for several months.
Erskine admitted that she wasn’t accustomed to gym life when she began, but had to adapt. She also mentioned that she had recently given birth. Donald [Glover] often questioned, “Are you absolutely certain about this?” He asked because he anticipated it would be demanding, and it certainly was.
In the initial episode, Erskine playfully explained that she pretended to perform the action by performing what she referred to as the “Tom Cruise sprint,” which she had learned.
Erskine clarified, ‘It gives the impression that I’m sprinting even when I’m not.’ As time passed, I found myself running more frequently. By the eighth installment, I had improved a bit. We were darting around New York City and up stairs… You pick up speed from such experiences quickly.
Another crucial element of figuring out Jane’s character was her wardrobe.
At times, we might have leaned too much towards masculine or feminine styles, as Erskine noted. The goal was to discover a vibrant, personalized style that Jane herself would wear – an intriguing task since the company knew precisely what a customer with ample resources would desire, making those clothes readily available for them. Determining the exact essence of this style proved to be quite a formidable challenge.
