Far Cry 7 internally delayed. Ubisoft seeks new formula for series, one direction is extraction shooter (rumor)

As a dedicated fan with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I must say that the latest updates about the upcoming Far Cry games have stirred quite a buzz within our community! With Tom Henderson as our trusted source, we can’t help but get excited for what’s in store, especially since these projects are being developed by none other than Ubisoft Montreal.

Exciting rumors about upcoming games within the Far Cry franchise are circulating online, and we find them credible due to their origin from the respected industry insider, Tom Henderson.

The information concerns the next main installment of the series, which is temporarily referred to as Blackbird within Ubisoft (this is about Far Cry 7), as well as the online spin-off, which is currently called Maverick.

  1. Both games were set to launch in 2025, but they were recently internally delayed to 2026 because the projects’ complexity was greater than initially anticipated.
  2. Both games are being developed by Ubisoft Montreal studio and are designed to significantly change the formula of the series. This is intended to involve, among other things, a comprehensive revamp of the movement system, making it more tactical while still retaining features from previous installments, such as sprinting, sliding, and jumping over obstacles, etc.

Far Cry 7 – unofficial details

In the game “Blackbird / Far Cry 7“, your mission is to rescue your abducted family, who have fallen victim to a cult fixated on wild conspiracy theories. This cult subjects both children and animals to disturbing experiments involving potent hallucinogens.

  1. The protagonist is supposed to have only 24 hours to complete this mission in the game world, but in reality, time is supposed to flow slower, so the player will have to do it in 72 hours. Our character is supposed to wear a watch, which will inform us how much time we have left to complete the task.
  2. According to Henderson, rumors that cult leader will be played by Cillian Murphy are untrue.

Far Cry: Maverick – unofficial details

Maverick is designed as a survival-themed shooter game, reminiscent of games like Escape from Tarkov and Hunt: Showdown, but with added survival aspects.

  1. The action will take place in the frosty regions of Alaska, and players will fight against each other and the aggressive local fauna.
  2. An important aspect of the gameplay will be dealing with extreme weather conditions.

Initially, the two projects were a single game named Talisker. However, they were later separated into distinct titles after some period. This is why both have numerous similarities in terms of gameplay mechanics and technology, such as transitioning from the Dunia engine used in earlier versions to the Snowdrop technology, which is also utilized in Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora and Star Wars: Outlaws.

In contrast, significant distinctions will emerge between the titles. For example, the inventory and looting system from “Maverick” won’t be found in “Far Cry 7”, as elements more fitting for an online extraction shooter wouldn’t align with a narrative centered around desperately saving our family from a cult.

The teams responsible for both projects seem positively confident about their upcoming developments. While there have been some setbacks in terms of timeliness, the game creation process is moving along satisfactorily, and the direction it’s heading is considered encouraging.

Despite this, it’s important to note that the team working on Maverick also shared apprehensions about the ongoing situation at Ubisoft and the cancellation of XDefiant. Although Far Cry 7 appears to be secure, the multiplayer offshoot of the franchise could potentially be terminated if it fails to meet the expectations of the higher-ups.
