As a seasoned movie reviewer with a penchant for all things quirky and offbeat, I must admit that “What We Do in the Shadows” has been a breath of fresh, undead air in the stale world of modern television. With its unique blend of humor and supernatural elements, this series has been a joy to follow since its humble beginnings as a spinoff from the 2014 mockumentary.
❗️WARNING: This content reveals plot points from “The Finale,” Season 6, Episode 11 of “What We Do in the Shadows” that aired on FX on December 16th. Proceed with caution if you haven’t watched it yet!
The Staten Island vampires of “What We Do in the Shadows” have closed their coffins for good.
As a die-hard film enthusiast, I must confess that the last episode of Season 6 served as the grand finale for the FX comedy series, which was initially a humorous spinoff from the 2014 mockumentary masterfully crafted by Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi. Much like other unconventional sitcoms, it wrapped up with fewer life lessons imparted and an endless promise of mischief yet to unfold, even beyond the final frame when the cameras stop rolling.
The story opens by Guillermo (Harvey Guillén), the human helper, expressing his disappointment that the documentary crew has captured enough content and will no longer visit the vampires’ residence. Although the immortal vampires – Guillermo’s boss Nandor (Kayvan Novak), Laszlo (Matt Berry), Nadja (Natasia Demetriou), Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch) and The Guide (Kristen Schaal) – don’t seem concerned about the end of filming, Guillermo starts to wonder if it’s time for him to leave Nandor’s service and the housekeeping duties. It’s intriguing to watch a mockumentary series ponder over the timeless question, “What will they do with all this accumulated footage?” This show doesn’t delve into that issue as deeply as ‘The Office’ (USA), but it raises an interesting point nonetheless.
Wow, I never expected this! As a film buff, I was taken aback to discover that the opening scene in this documentary wasn’t the first footage ever filmed in that house. The clip suddenly switched to an unreleased 1958 series titled “Vampires,” produced by the legendary Maysles Brothers. Intriguingly, the vampires in this series were engaging in the same hygiene discussion they had just moments ago!
In this captivating episode, I found myself quite intrigued when Nadja boldly stepped out of the screen to mesmerize us, subtly influencing our choice for the most fulfilling ending. The scene shifted to a clever, visually stunning spoof reminiscent of “The Usual Suspects” finale, where I, as the detective, squared off against Proksch’s portrayal of the cunning character akin to “Verbal” Kint, Kevin Spacey’s iconic persona who weaved an intricate tapestry of deceit by concocting fictitious names from items strewn about the room.
Later on, viewers find themselves returning to the present moment to spend a while longer with the housemates. Eventually, Guillermo shares his intentions on camera to depart the house in search of self-discovery. Notably, Nandor grants him the permission to address him by his personal name instead of “master.” However, just as the film crew starts dismantling the set, Guillermo quickly reappears, explaining that he merely wanted to provide a concluding scene for the documentary and emphasizing that their professional separation doesn’t prohibit them from being friends.
Over a cherry on top during the ending credits, vampires and Guillermo view the initial episode of the documentary. “Is this a preliminary version, correct? You’re open to suggestions?” inquired Colin Robinson as the residents departed in indifference, with only Guillermo showing interest in the video footage. This moment showcases humility at its best.
In the crowded world of TV shows filled with intricate plots, transformative character arcs, and dramatic twists, “What We Do in the Shadows” stood out as an unapologetically funny and offbeat sitcom reminiscent of Jackie Daytona’s spirit. Indeed, he would have cheered its existence and success.
