Luigi Mangione Documentary Frenzy Continues with Hour-Long Investigation Discovery Special Produced by Dan Abrams (EXCLUSIVE)

As a seasoned cinephile with over three decades of immersion in the world of entertainment journalism under my belt, I must say that the race to unravel the Luigi Mangione saga has become quite the cinematic spectacle itself. The sheer number of projects vying for a piece of this captivating true-crime pie is reminiscent of a high-stakes Hollywood bidding war – only this time, it’s about who gets to tell the story of one man accused of a heinous crime that has gripped our collective attention.

The competition to create a true-crime or documentary series about Luigi Mangione, who stands accused of murdering United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York, is becoming increasingly intense. Most recently, it’s been reported that Warner Bros. Discovery’s crime channel, Investigation Discovery, is preparing their version of the story, which has grabbed attention in news outlets lately. The upcoming production, tentatively titled “Who Is Luigi Mangione?”, is scheduled to air in February.

Dan Abrams, known for his role as TV host, reporter, and founder of Law & Crime, is responsible for an hour-long special program. According to ID’s confirmation, this special will examine the unresolved aspects of Mangione’s arrest and investigate how someone with such wealth and privilege could potentially carry out a horrendous crime. The goal is also to delve into the psychological factors that allegedly drove the suspect.

Abrams is CEO and Founder of Abrams Media, chief legal affairs correspondent for ABC News, host of NewsNation’s “Dan Abrams Live” and Reelz’s “On Patrol: Live,” and also has a show on SiriusXM. The ID special will feature him and “other experts, industry insiders, and people close to Mangione,” ID added, and “will examine his mental state and investigate the theories surrounding the events that led to his arrest.”

On Monday, I was privy to an exclusive piece of news: Stephen Robert Morse, known for producing the Netflix documentary “Amanda Knox,” is diving into a new project – this time, delving into the United Healthcare murder and its subsequent fallout. This project will encompass the victims, their families, and none other than Mangione himself. Interestingly, prior to this, Anonymous Content and Alex Gibney’s Jigsaw Productions were also reported to be working on a separate documentary centered around this intriguing case.

On December 4th, Thompson met his end outside a hotel in Manhattan. By December 9th, Mangione, aged 26, was discovered in Altoona, Pennsylvania.

Luigi Mangione is the subject of a new project by Wheelhouse’s Twist Media, in collaboration with Law & Crime for Investigation Discovery (ID). Known for its ripped-from-the-headlines specials and documentaries, ID achieved a higher level of success in early 2024 with ‘Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV.’ Following this achievement, they have continued to produce events such as ‘Chris Brown: A History of Violence,’ an upcoming docuseries about Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs, and more.
