As a seasoned gaming enthusiast with memories spanning decades, I find myself reminiscing about the good old days of Command and Conquer: Generals. The game was a sensation back then, and its sequel, Generals, was no exception. However, it’s the peculiar twist in the German version that truly intrigues me.
Today, it’s probable that the interest of tactical war game enthusiasts centers around “Broken Arrow.” However, three decades ago, the crown jewel was “Command and Conquer,” a game widely recognized as one of the most influential real-time strategy titles in gaming history.
The follow-up title, “Command and Conquer: Generals“, published initially by EA Los Angeles (now known as Danger Close Games), similarly garnered significant popularity. However, not everyone may have been aware that the game underwent unusual censorship in Germany, leading to the iconic generals being transformed into robots. The creators behind the localized version of this renowned RTS strategy game shared insights on how this peculiar alteration was implemented.
Bots on the front
On the subreddit r/gaming, a comparison graphic was shared between the original game “Command and Conquer: Generals” and its German edition. At a glance, it’s clear that the human soldiers in the German version have been changed to cyborgs.
The original “Command and Conquer” wasn’t typically classified as a science fiction game, making the choice by the Germans rather unexpected. Many critics struggled to comprehend the reasoning behind this shift. However, surprisingly, the developer of the German edition provided clarification, revealing the reason for incorporating robots onto the battlefield.
In my initial job within the tech industry, we launched the game titled “Generals” just before the second Iraq invasion. Initially, German regulators objected to the potential interpretation of the game as war propaganda and refused to allow its release in their country unless all references to real-world events were removed. Consequently, we decided to alter the combatants into robots polluted with grime!
The Reddit user Ferrarisimo admitted that the significant modification was crucial for the game’s triumph, as German fans of Command and Conquer were its most devoted enthusiasts.
Due to the entire development team transitioning to projects like “Zero Hour” or “Battle for Middle-earth,” the studio head delegated this task to me instead. It was certainly unexpected, but I felt honored by the trust placed in me. Since Germany was our primary market, I thoroughly enjoyed representing the team during local press tours for that game. This opportunity then paved the way for me to continue showcasing our team’s future games across Europe for many years.
Games on censorship
Back in the ’90s, I, as a passionate gamer, observed that video games were under intense public examination. Many perceived them as harboring potential dangers, which led to the careful screening of newly released titles for “immoral gameplay mechanics.” Project-shasta from Germany shed light on what video game censorship in their country was all about.
In simpler terms, for Germans like us, the robotic soldiers in the Command & Conquer series have been part of the game’s backstory since its beginning. Back then, there were stricter rules due to the sensitive nature of World War II themes. This included avoiding depictions of green blood, no Nazi symbols, and video games not being considered an art form yet, which meant certain content was restricted under our constitution. However, we’ve become more lenient over time.
Command and Conquer: Generals” was launched about two decades back. Since then, there have been many changes. The gaming industry has grown considerably within the cultural realm. However, it continues to stir up moral concerns from time to time. As you can observe, much like war itself, certain aspects remain constant.
