As an avid fan of Carpool Karaoke, I must say that this holiday special featuring Lady Gaga, Dua Lipa, and Chappell Roan is nothing short of a musical delight! Each segment offers a unique glimpse into their lives, showcasing not only their incredible vocal prowess but also their heartwarming personal stories.
In a festive twist, these renowned pop stars – Lady Gaga, Dua Lipa, and Chappell Roan – are eagerly anticipating taking the passenger seat this Christmas in “A Very Carpool Karaoke Christmas“, an unexpected holiday release on Apple TV+ and Apple Music, where they spread holiday cheer through caroling.
On Sunday evening at 9 PM Pacific Time / 12 AM Eastern Time, an hour-long episode of the Emmy-winning “Carpool Karaoke: The Series” was unexpectedly made available on Apple’s platforms. This marks the return of the franchise following a fifth season that concluded 18 months ago on Apple TV+.
In this rephrased version: Zane Lowe takes charge as host throughout the entire hour-long special, initially introduced as both the guest driver and duet partner in a short opening segment. This brief introduction begins with James Corden, a regular feature of the franchise, symbolically passing control over by phone call from England.
Lowe’s apparent purpose is to chauffeur Roan around her hometown Missouri, Lipa around Tokyo prior to a concert, and Gaga around Los Angeles en route to a studio session. The final “ride” concludes with Lowe playing electric guitar in Gaga’s band for an in-studio version of “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town,” which is also being independently distributed as an audio track.
The hour resembles a contemporary twist on traditional Christmas variety shows from the past, where each performer is encouraged to enthusiastically join in popular holiday tunes as well as their most famous songs. In a lively performance setting, all three of them effortlessly pass the “Carpool Karaoke” challenge, demonstrating strong vocal abilities, energetic movements, and an undeniable charm, whether they’re wearing seatbelts or not.
The caroling ranges from Lipa singing along to the Ronettes’ “Sleigh Ride” to Roan’s karaoke take on Wham’s “Last Christmas.” Gaga is the only one of the three with an original Christmas song to bring up. She tells Lowe that her preference in Christmas music is for “something wholesome and sentimental… you know, a song that the whole family can get together and sing,” before breaking into her deeply salacious 2008 single “Christmas Tree,” which melds bits of “Deck the Halls” with saucy assertions that “underneath the mistletoe, everybody knows we will take off our clothes” and “my Christmas tree’s delicious.”
Talking about Gaga, my journey with Lowe starts at my family’s farm where I introduce him to a chicken named after me. We all pile into the SUV with my folks, Kara and Dwight, and as we drive, we sing along to “Pink Pony Club.” The host asks Kara about her feelings, being partially responsible for that iconic tune. “I got emotional just now listening to her perform it,” she says. “We adore her and are incredibly proud of her achievements, her identity, and her values. I enjoy singing it with her at her concerts and I love seeing the audience’s reaction when they hear it. Even as we grow older, our parents’ approval still matters a lot.
As a doting father, I can’t help but express my heartfelt sentiments. I fervently hope that Roan always recognizes the depth of our love for her, a love so boundless it could never wane or cease to be proud. I frequently find myself wrestling with my emotions on this matter, yet I am already overcome. Roan has imparted to me a profound sense of respect for all people, and I yearn for others to grasp its significance. Every aspect of her being radiates love for everyone, and she has been instrumental in teaching me this valuable lesson.
Roan shares her upbringing was “fairly religious,” an experience she found intensely restrictive. Many find this liberating, but for Roan, it had the opposite effect. She felt her true self was a sin and she was destined for hell regardless of her kindness or devotion to God because she was gay. The constant feeling of shame became unbearable for her. However, Roan found a sense of freedom moving to L.A., but she appreciates her roots in Missouri, even if it’s in a conservative community. She acknowledges the fear there stems from ignorance and unfamiliarity. It’s like one step at a time in every conversation, she says. It’s a series of conversations, not abandoning those who once helped her when she was just a baby. To Roan, learning requires keeping the door open for dialogue.
The atmosphere becomes more lively when Roan reunites with some old high school friends at Andy’s Frozen Custard, and orders a unique blend called the James Brownie Funky Jackhammer. “I’d honestly prefer an Andy’s Frozen Custard special over a Grammy,” she jokes, emphasizing she’s not being flippant.
In Gaga’s segment, a fourth celebrity makes a cameo appearance on the special, after Gaga shares video footage of her late grandmother singing AC/DC’s “Highway to Hell.” “I brought you Brian Johnson for Christmas,” Lowe says, stopping to let the AC/DC singer into the car. “You want to hear something funny?” Gaga asks him. “I was in the ‘Stiff Upper Lip’ video (in 2000)… I was 17 and I was an extra in the back… and I was headbanging. And they were like, ‘Don’t headbang. We want it to be modern.’ And I was like, ‘No, I can’t (stop). Like, there’s only one move that I can do.’”
Apart from a brief rendition of Led Zeppelin’s “Black Dog”, Gaga performs her latest hit “Die With a Smile” and shares stories about collaborating with Bruno Mars during the production of her upcoming “LG7” album. She describes the experience as wild, revealing she visited him late at night, listened to his idea, co-wrote the second verse, and recorded it at 2 am. Gaga mentions that Bruno made her sing for four hours, insisting on a specific style she was determined to deliver.
In Tokyo, Lipa spends her Christmas shopping day with Lowe and performs a piece of “I Wanna Dance With Somebody,” harmonizing with Whitney Houston’s original version. She shares a tale about her past, where as a youngster, she seized the opportunity to step onto the stage at a Katy Perry concert alongside other audience members to sing along to that cover. Inspired by the moment, Lipa now concludes every performance of hers with “Dance With Somebody.
