The Shining Is Getting A New 4K Steelbook Limited Edition, Preorders Available Now

As a long-time enthusiast of both literature and cinema, I must say that this collection of deals and offers is truly a treasure trove for any aficionado like myself! It reminds me of the time when I was a young lad, hunched over my old typewriter, trying to pen my own masterpiece (though let’s be honest, it was more like a horror story about a haunted rubber duck), and dreaming of seeing my words brought to life on the silver screen.

On February 4th, Stanley Kubrick’s iconic horror masterpiece, “The Shining,” will be released in a new 4K Blu-ray edition. Walmart is now taking preorders for an exclusive Limited Edition Steelbook, priced at just $29.65. This special edition includes the 4K version, a standard 1080p Blu-ray disc, and a digital copy of the film compatible with Movies Anywhere. Plus, it comes in a striking steelbook case that’s guaranteed to be a hit among avid fans of “The Shining.” I, for one, have already preordered mine!

  • The Shining Limited Edition Steelbook 4K Blu-ray (Walmart Exclusive) — $29.65

As a dedicated gamer and cinephile, I can confidently say that The Shining, a classic horror masterpiece by Stephen King, has been consistently popular since its adaptation by Kubrick. With it still being one of the top-selling horror 4K Blu-rays on Amazon, the release of the steelbook edition in 2021 is an exciting opportunity for fans like me. And the best part? The steelbook version is only $7 more than the standard 4K release, making it a no-brainer given that the latter doesn’t come with a digital copy. So, if you haven’t already grabbed your copy of The Shining in stunning 4K resolution, now might be the perfect time!

Unlike previous versions of The Shining’s steelbook edition, which are scarce and overpriced on second-hand markets, this one is not new but a welcome addition. Previous 4K Blu-ray steelbook releases were exclusive to Best Buy and cost around $30. Now, in 2025, it’s refreshing to find that the price of this Walmart edition is the same as it was back in 2019, although technically it’s only 24 cents cheaper than the $29.99 Best Buy charged for their steelbook release.

If you’re a fan of the movie, be sure to keep an eye out for the upcoming two-book collection about it. Originally planned for release in November, but now expected on December 26th, the art book compilation of Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining by Taschen is available for preorder at Amazon, although it’s currently sold out at most major retailers. This extensive 1,400-page, two-volume hardcover set delves deeply into the creation and impact of The Shining.

This comprehensive collection, titled “Volume One,” was skillfully curated by Lee Unkrich, a renowned filmmaker who has directed films such as Toy Story 3 and Coco, and co-directed Toy Story 2, Finding Nemo, and Monsters, Inc. The author of this book is J.W. Rinzler, an accomplished film historian famous for his extensive research into iconic movie series, like the three-volume “The Making of Star Wars,” which delves into the making of the original trilogy. Rinzler’s work is primarily based on numerous in-depth interviews, and it has a foreword penned by none other than Steven Spielberg.

In simpler terms, Volume Two is a richly compiled scrapbook filled with original materials from Stanley Kubrick’s personal archives, such as sketches, on-set photos, correspondence, and unused footage. Many of these items are exclusive to this book.

Taschen has published multiple other books about Stanley Kubrick that are worth checking out:

  • The Stanley Kubrick Archives (Hardcover) — $58 ($100) | Coffee table book
  • The Stanley Kubrick Archives (Hardcover) — $21.64 ($25) | Compact edition
  • The Making of Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey (Hardcover) — $57 ($80)
  • Through a Different Lens: Stanley Kubrick Photographs (Hardcover) — $32 ($40)

The Shining & Doctor Sleep Blu-rays

In 2013, Stephen King penned an impressive follow-up to The Shining titled Doctor Sleep. This sequel centers around a grown-up Dan Torrance who battles his inner demons and the hotel that played a significant role in shaping them – the Overlook Hotel. Mike Flanagan brought this novel to life on the big screen in 2019. Critics agree that Doctor Sleep is one of the finest modern adaptations of King’s work. If you’re interested in watching The Shining and Doctor Sleep, check out the current listings for 4K and standard Blu-ray releases. Notably, a standard Blu-ray combo pack offers both movies at a lower price than buying them separately – you can get The Shining and Doctor Sleep for just $11.

The 1997 TV series based on Stephen King’s book is included in the list. Many people appreciate Kubrick’s adaptation, yet King, to put it mildly, isn’t a fan of it. Interestingly, King himself wrote the script for the 1997 ABC miniseries. As a dedicated Stephen King fan myself, I found the miniseries quite enjoyable, although it doesn’t receive as much acclaim as the movie does. However, it’s still a watch worth your time, and you can get the Blu-ray edition for just $22 on Amazon, which was recently released.

  • The Shining (4K Blu-ray) — $23 ($42)
  • Doctor Sleep: Director’s Cut (4K Blu-ray) — $22 ($25)
  • The Shining + Doctor Sleep (Blu-ray) — $11 ($23)
  • The Shining (Blu-ray) — $12 ($20)
  • Stanley Kubrick 3-Film 4K Collection: The Shining, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Full Metal Jacket (4K Blu-ray) — $50 ($85)
  • Stanley Kubrick Triple Feature: The Shining, A Clockwork Orange, 2001: A Space Odyssey (Blu-ray) — $17
  • The Shining (1997 TV Series, Blu-ray) — $22 ($35)

Stephen King – The Shining & Doctor Sleep Novels

The Shining Is Getting A New 4K Steelbook Limited Edition, Preorders Available Now

If you haven’t yet read Stephen King’s 1977 novel that inspired Kubrick’s movie, The Shining, you can grab a copy at Amazon for a budget-friendly price. There’s an attractive “retro” hardcover edition available for just $23. The Shining is one of the top horror novels from the past fifty years, and while Kubrick’s film adaptation is excellent, it varies significantly from the book. Both works are genre classics. Doctor Sleep, another novel by King, may not be as impressive (as expected), but it’s a worthwhile sequel that’s enjoyable even if you’ve already watched Flanagan’s movie adaptation.

  • The Shining (Hardcover) — $23 ($45)
  • The Shining (Paperback) — $12.36 ($20)
  • The Shining (Mass Market Paperback) — $7.50 ($10)
  • Doctor Sleep (Hardcover) — $17 ($30)
  • Doctor Sleep (Paperback) — $10.49 ($20)

Two current paperback collections include “The Shining,” along with two other classic novels by Stephen King. The North American release, titled “Stephen King Three Classic Novels Box Set,” features his early bestsellers, starting from his debut novel, “Carrie.” Following “Carrie” was ‘Salem’s Lot, and “The Shining” was his fourth published work. Interestingly, his third book, “Rage,” was initially released under the pseudonym Richard Bachman but is no longer in circulation. A five-book collection (see below) also includes “Cujo” and “Firestarter.” However, be mindful that this set contains UK editions published by Hodder & Stoughton.

  • Stephen King Three Classic Novels Paperback Box Set (The Shining, Carrie, ‘Salem’s Lot) — $41.34 ($57)
  • Stephen King five-book paperback set (Cujo, Salem’s Lot, The Shining, Doctor Sleep, Firestarter) — $53 ($60)
