‘Saturday Night Live’ Weekend Update Riffs on Matt Gaetz, Donald Trump and RFK Jr.

As a long-time SNL enthusiast with a soft spot for satire and wit, I must say that this week’s ‘Weekend Update’ was a rollercoaster ride of humor and political commentary. The way they tackled the Brian Thompson case, the Trump administration, and the latest antics of Matt Gaetz left me in stitches!

On the latest edition of ‘Weekend Update’, they swiftly targeted Donald Trump upon becoming President-elect, along with people close to him such as RFK Jr., Elon Musk, and Matt Gaetz.

Of course, “Saturday Night Live” started their mock news segment by discussing the captivating story of the healthcare CEO who was shot, Brian Thompson from United HealthCare. This incident occurred on December 4th in Midtown Manhattan and has since sparked a thoughtful, delicate debate among us about who should portray him in the upcoming Netflix miniseries. Colin Jost, the host of “Weekend Update,” made this observation.

In addition, it was pointed out by Jost that although Luigi Mangione, the alleged shooter, is believed to have harbored hostility towards large corporations, the details of the case don’t seem to align with this assumption. “He even visited Starbucks before the shooting and was spotted at McDonald’s – perhaps his biggest offense was hypocrisy,” Jost commented.

As I took turns with my fellow anchor, Michael Che, we traded witty remarks about Donald Trump and his circle. Remarking on how Time Magazine had honored him as Man of the Year, I mused that the title was fitting since he’s consumed so much of everyone’s time.

Earlier this week, Che observed that Matt Gaetz, a former GOP congressman embroiled in controversy, is now joining One America Network to host a political talk show. Amidst an ongoing ethics investigation, Gaetz stepped down from his position. Previously, he was disqualified from being considered for the Attorney General role under Trump, as it was evident that even with Trump’s strong endorsement, Gaetz, who has been accused of inappropriate sexual conduct involving underage girls, lacked Senate support for confirmation.

Gaetz’s fresh OAN series promises to explore topics ranging from quinceañera celebrations to pre-prom anxieties, mentioned Che.

Among other political barbs:

Referencing RFK Jr.’s campaign against polio vaccine mandates, Che humorously remarked, “It’s not Christmas without a few Tiny Tims.” (Here, Tiny Tim is a character from Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol who is ill but ultimately recovers, symbolizing hope and resilience. In this context, it implies that vaccines, in this case for polio, help prevent illness and ensure health, much like Tiny Tim being cured.)

In a joking manner, Elon Musk quipped about Trump and the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg sharing the same view on abortion, saying playfully, “It never even crossed my mind that Trump could have been Ginsburg’s child.

While Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson graced the Broadway stage for a one-night-only performance in the musical “& Juliet,” Che humorously commented that Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas stole the show in “Kinky Boots.

During the “Weekend Update” segment, there were extended sections with cast members Andrew Dismukes and Jane Wickline. Dismukes humorously commented on the U.K. court ruling that made headlines this week, which deemed calling a man bald as harassment. Meanwhile, Wickline performed one of her famous songs, poking fun at Sabrina Carpenter and Wickline’s attempt to generate internet gossip about her sexuality to boost her career.

In the online world, many spread gossip about if popular musicians are gay. I can’t help but wonder when someone might stir up such talk about me, as I sing,” Wickline sang.
