A Malcolm in the Middle Reboot: Yes, No, Maybe, I Don’t Know?

As a die-hard fan of Malcolm in the Middle who grew up watching the show during its original run, I must admit that I was initially skeptical about the idea of bringing back the Wilkerson family for a limited series on Disney+. However, after reading about Frankie Muniz’s return and hearing that Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek are also set to reprise their roles, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgic excitement.

The nostalgia factory in Hollywood is churning out projects, and who better to understand that process than NASCAR driver Frankie Muniz? He’s recently joined the cast for a four-episode return of “Malcolm in the Middle,” as announced by Disney+ today. Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek will also reappear in their original roles, while Linwood Boomer, the show’s creator, is back on board as writer and executive producer. The upcoming episodes will focus on an older Malcolm and his daughter being pulled into more family chaos at Hal and Lois’s 40th wedding anniversary celebration. A release date has not been determined yet.

There’s been talk about whether we might see the Wilkerson family return to our TV screens, as Muniz mentioned in 2022 that Cranston had been writing a script for it. However, a more pressing question is, should they? When Malcolm’s single-camera sitcom first aired over two decades ago, its humor and emotional depth were rooted in a scrappy optimism that seems quite out of touch with today’s political landscape. Not to mention, the series finale showed Malcolm on a path to becoming the people’s president, which contrasts starkly with the reality of another wealthy demagogue taking office these days. Additionally, there’s no news yet about any other siblings potentially joining in. So, if Malcolm returns, who will he find himself surrounded by?

Perhaps there’s no reason for us to fret, as the passage of time has provided the show’s creators with ample creative inspiration. For example, a storyline involving a cat causing a flood in the family’s house could prove hilarious.
