„Geralt wouldn't let her do the trials.” Fans speculate why Ciri drinks elixirs in The Witcher 4 trailer

As a seasoned gamer with a soft spot for The Witcher series, I must say the announcement of The Witcher 4, or Project Polaris as it’s now known, has sent my heart racing! After years of speculation and teases, finally seeing Ciri step into the limelight as a full-fledged witcher is truly exciting.

For the tenth consecutive year, The Game Awards didn’t disappoint in delivering a significant gaming world unveiling. In celebration of this milestone, CD Projekt RED made an unexpected comeback to announce Project Polaris, affectionately known as “The Witcher 4“. Over two years have transpired since the initial tease, with developers remaining tight-lipped about the project – one might find it amusing that a document featuring pieces from the third installment seems coincidentally reappeared.

Today, it’s clear that the central character will indeed be Ciri, and in a unique way. This young lady exhibits powers akin to those of a Witcher, which has left many fans rather astonished.

Trial of the Grasses

Experts of the cosmos know that to acquire witcher abilities, a candidate must undergo the Trials of the Grasses. These trials are not just painful but also highly perilous; only one-third of the boys who attempt them manage to survive. Unfortunately for Ciri, her earlier training omitted this aspect, meaning she lacks the witcher senses and is unable to use elixirs.

Today’s trailer reveals that Zirael possesses the skills akin to a Witcher, and has successfully completed the notorious trials. This fact was verified by CD Projekt RED on IGN’s platform. As stated in the interview, Ciri is embarking on her journey as a fully-fledged Witcher.

We aim to give players an opportunity to shape Ciri based on their choices. Soon, she will create a personal guidebook that reflects her style. Whether confronting beasts, completing missions, or embarking on journeys, her approach will be distinctively hers.

– Sebastian Kalemba

Simultaneously, CD Projekt Red acknowledged that the abilities wielded by Ciri aren’t merely basic signs, but rather, they represent potent magic. This is reminiscent of the magical prowess book fans remember in Geralt’s adopted daughter, who by the third installment was already demonstrating talents such as teleportation. Kalemba refers to her as a “significant force” that bridges the realm of witchers and mages.

Who conducted Ciri through the ritual?

It’s widely believed among fans that none of the familiar characters would have been able to assist Ciri in passing the Trial of the Grasses due to its perceived danger, particularly for adults. This suggests that the future protagonist may have discovered a different approach to deal with the ritual, possibly keeping her family unaware if she did it in secret.

In this scene, it’s noticeable that Ciri is wearing a medallion unlike any wolf-themed one she’s had before, leading some to speculate about her potential new traits being associated with either the Lynx or the Cat. However, it’s important to note that the Cat school didn’t have the best image in “The Witcher 3”. It’s also worth mentioning that we previously saw this very same medallion in the 2022 graphic novel.

If the medallion resembles the one hinted at in the snow, it stands out quite differently from the medallion associated with the cat school. The cat school medallion is generally more circular and features much smaller, triangular and rounded ears compared to the lynx medallion’s pointed ears.

It seems as though there exists another Witcher school that’s still in operation somewhere. However, it’s unlikely that Geralt, Eskel, or Lambert would have approved of her taking part in the Trials, even if they were still capable of conducting them.

In the game Wild Hunt, we experienced a trial similar to the Trial of Grasses during Uma’s transformation into Avallac’h. At the end of the quest, players had the option to keep the ritual manuscripts, hinting that the witchers intended to hide them deep within the fortress. Considering how trials affect fertility, it’s likely that Ciri is the last living person with Elder Blood.

In just a few short hours since the unveiling of the trailer, we’re likely to gather some additional details about The Witcher 4. For now, let’s savor the excitement and remain patient as more information unfolds.
