Video games caused media hysteria again. UnitedHealthcare CEO's killer was to play as assassin in Among Us

As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in virtual worlds and digital battles, I find it rather unfortunate that our beloved pastime is once again being dragged into the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. The latest case involving Luigi Mangione and his alleged connection to video games feels like a recurring nightmare, one that we’ve experienced far too many times before.

There’s been a lot of talk online regarding Luigi Mangione, who stands accused of murdering the CEO of UnitedHealthcare. This incident took place on December 4th, but it wasn’t until five days later that Mangione was caught. Since then, people have been discussing his possible motive. One theory being explored is video games.

“That’s very ironic”

As a passionate gamer myself, I found myself becoming the center of attention when rumors started swirling about my gaming habits, particularly my love for Among Us. According to NBC, I was known within a circle of fellow gamers as one who played the role of an assassin.

Through a friend close to one of the suspects, this story gained attention by the media. This person found the correlation between the case and video games particularly ironic, as expressed in an interview with NBC News. This remark sparked a series of online articles suggesting a link between video game play and violent behavior.

The subject occasionally appears in the news, and one of the more prominent contemporary figures expressing opinions on this issue was Donald Trump, who in 2019 attributed mass shootings to video games such as Doom. During that period, this particular game received criticism due to rumors suggesting the perpetrators were enthusiasts of it.

What is the real motive?

It’s unlikely that the 26-year-old’s motive for murder was due to playing the game “Among Us.” Instead, evidence suggests that he may have been motivated by a desire to challenge the unfair and exclusive practices within the U.S. healthcare system, as indicated in a manifesto he left behind, although its authenticity is questionable online.

In the manifesto, Mangione expresses his growing discontent with escalating expenses and corporate avarice, while highlighting disparities in health care provision. He further condemns the impact of giant corporations (such as UnitedHealthcare) on people’s daily lives. The topics he addressed have been a contentious point of discussion and social critique in the US for quite some time now, but they remain unaddressed to the dissatisfaction of American society.

Unabomber of the 21st century?

Articles about this case often highlight Mangione’s fascination with Ted Kaczynski, who is more commonly recognized as the Unabomber. Kaczynski wrote a manifesto against technology, critiquing contemporary society and its technological influence on our world.

In the latter part of the 20th century, this individual was primarily recognized as a terrorist – he conducted multiple terrorist acts, which represented an extreme form of resistance towards technological advancements and their perceived influence on global destiny.

In actuality, it’s challenging to pinpoint the precise reasons that led Mangione to carry out such extreme actions. A combination of his convictions, frustrations, and motivations seem to be factors, but it’s important to note that video games, including Among Us, played no role in this (absolutely not!). Attributing such events to video games is a misleading generalization. Drawing connections between them does little to shed light on the underlying causes of such incidents or to prevent them from happening again in the future.
