Path Of Exile 2: Cross-play, Co-op, and Friend Invites Explained

As a seasoned gamer with years of experience under my belt, I must say that Path of Exile 2 has caught my eye and piqued my curiosity. The prospect of diving into a three-act campaign with friends or solo is an appealing one, and the endgame content promises to keep me engaged for hours on end.

Path of Exile 2 offers an early access three-act story mode alongside a wealth of endgame content. You can embark on this adventure either solo, relying solely on your skills, or with a group of six players. Moreover, five additional players are allowed to join you, though the party size can be expanded up to six.

Organizing a party with friends while simultaneously delving into Path of Exile 2 might seem like an exciting idea, but setting it up logistically can prove tricky. Let us guide you through the steps on how to add friends and create a party in Path of Exile 2.

How to add friends in Path of Exile 2

In the upcoming Path of Exile 2, adding friends becomes a breeze; simply use their username along with a tag number. It’s important to note that Path of Exile 2 supports full cross-play, meaning you can connect with any friend on any platform.

To invite a friend, just navigate to the Social section (press ‘J’ on your keyboard by default), then look for the “Friends” option. Inside that area, input your friend’s username and the number after the “#” symbol displayed next to their name into the “Invite Friend” field. If you entered everything accurately, click “Send,” and they will receive the request in their Social section.

Additionally, you have the option to locate your friend requests within the ‘Social’ section. Here, under the ‘Invitations Received’ box in the ‘Friends’ tab, you can review your pending friend requests. Furthermore, this area also allows you to view both your online and offline friends.

The appearance of the Social tab may vary depending on whether you’re using keyboard/mouse or a controller. Yet, the functioning of the menu remains consistent; you’ll still need to navigate to the Friends tab, type in your friend’s name and tag them to add them.

In Path of Exile 2, if you’re currently in a guild, simply click on another tab to access the “Guild” section within the Social menu. Here, you can check out your guild and see who is online at the moment. This gives you the option to send them private messages or invite them to join your in-game party. If you don’t already belong to a guild, this area also serves as a hub where you can join one or review any invitations you might have received for joining a guild.

How to make a party in Path of Exile 2

After inviting some companions to join you in Path of Exiel 2, it’s now time for everyone to gather in a group. Here’s how you can accomplish that:

  • Scroll over to the “Create Party” tab from the Social menu.
  • Here, you’ll have the option to create a party or join a party.
  • If you want to create a party, select that option and invite any online friends to join it. You can also make your party public and have anyone join it.
  • You can set certain restrictions on your party, which include opening it up to friends only or invite only.
  • Once someone joins the party, you’ll be notified so you can all group up in the same location.
  • To join a party, select that option. However, this will only allow you to join Public Parties, which are parties that others have made.
  • To join a friend’s party, click on their name in your friends list and if their party is open to friends, you can join it.
  • If your friend’s party is set to invite only, you’ll need an invite from them to join the party.

Path Of Exile 2: Cross-play, Co-op, and Friend Invites Explained

All matters concerning friends and events like parties are handled via the Social menu. If you’re unsure about anything, remember to look there for any pending requests, invitations, or a list of your friends.

How to play couch co-op in Path of Exile 2

Absolutely, participating in a party in Path of Exile 2 isn’t limited to browsing the friends list. The game offers local multiplayer mode (couch co-op) too. With this feature, you can play alongside another person who is using the same system as you. To engage in couch co-op, ensure you have two controllers connected to your device and create two distinct characters respectively. This setup doesn’t work with two keyboards and mice.

After linking up both controllers, navigate to the character pick screen. In the corner at the top-left, click on the gear icon for settings, then choose Input from the menu. Ensure that your input mode is set to “Controller.” Upon completing this step, return to the character selection screen. Now, each controller will allow you to either create or select a character. Player 1’s area will be on the left side of the screen and Player 2’s on the right.

If there’s no choice to add another character, you might find the text “P2: Connect a Controller” at the upper right corner instead. This suggests that your second controller may not be properly connected or functioning.

Once you’ve successfully booted up both characters, you can enjoy playing Path of Exile 2 just like usual. The unique aspect is that your screen will now be divided into two parts.

Can you disable cross-play in Path of Exile 2?

In Path of Exile 2, there’s the option for cross-play across PS5, Xbox, and PC. However, certain gamers may prefer to play with players exclusively from their own platform within the game.

It seems that there isn’t a method available for completely disabling cross-play. Upon checking all settings and the Social menu, I couldn’t find an option to enable or disable this feature. There’s a chance, however, that the ability to turn off cross-play might become available in future updates during early access or at the game’s full launch.

At present, if you’re using Xbox Series X|S or PS5, you can prevent cross-platform play across your entire system by adjusting the console’s settings. To do this, navigate to the “Account and Network” settings on your device. Unfortunately, PC players don’t have the option to turn off cross-play in Path of Exile 2 at the moment.
