As a die-hard fan of The Simpsons since its debut in 1989, I can hardly contain my excitement for this unique crossover event between my beloved animated family and the world of sports! This is not just a game between the Cowboys and Bengals; it’s a collision of two universes that have captivated millions.
Apart from bearing a striking resemblance to Bart Simpson, Cincinnati Bengals’ quarterback Joe Burrow has been exhibiting traits reminiscent of the character. Most recently, he splurged $3 million on a Batmobile, similar to the one featured in Christopher Nolan’s “Dark Knight” trilogy.
In simpler terms, Matt Selman, an executive producer on “The Simpsons”, remarked that Bart’s action of acquiring money and purchasing the Batmobile was akin to Bart’s behavior. He went on to compare Bart to Joe Burrow, both having spiky blonde hair, suggesting they share a rebellious spirit. Selman found it almost unbelievable how fitting this resemblance was.
It’s quite coincidental, isn’t it? Tonight, Bart Simpson will pretend to be Burrow’s Bengals coach in the “Monday Night Football” on NFL. However, this is not entirely true. The NFL, Disney+, ESPN, and “The Simpsons” producers have teamed up for a unique cast aimed at kids and families. They are transforming tonight’s game between the Bengals and Dallas Cowboys into an animated “Simpsons” version called “The Simpsons Funday Football”. The actual game will still be broadcast on ABC, ESPN, and ESPN2 (and Manningcast on ESPN2), but the animated version will stream live on Disney+ and ESPN+ at 8 PM ET.
Selman referred to it as an enticing predicament since we, being avid NFL fans within ‘The Simpsons’ writing team, are drawn to ESPN and its vibrant figures. The question becomes: how can we create a ‘Simpsons’ rendition of a live football game that retains the essence of both our show and football? It’s about finding the harmony between football and ‘The Simpsons’, and that’s what makes it enjoyable and challenging.
The upcoming three-hour spectacle combines the real sporting match with a “Simpsons” narrative, progressing simultaneously as the game unfolds. Immediately following its first broadcast on Disney+ and ESPN+, “The Simpsons Funday Football” will become accessible 12 hours later for on-demand viewing (for 30 days exclusively on Disney+). For those who are short on time, a condensed version of “The Simpsons Funday Football,” around 40 minutes long, will be available swiftly on Disney Channel, Disney XD, FX, and FXX.
The daring takeover will initiate using a standard, two-dimensional “The Simpsons” plotline, led by “Simpsons” writer Joel Cohen. This narrative features Homer experiencing a “hot dog fever dream,” where he fantasizes about coaching the Cowboys against Bart on the Bengals team.
According to Selman, Homer’s angry with Bart and feels like he might want to give him a good scolding or punishment. That’s the gist of it, there’s not too much else to add.
During this loop, encompassing a mid-game animated sequence too, the ESPN crew has crafted countless computer-generated scenes starring Springfield’s residents. These scenes will be strategically scattered across the live broadcast.
The gameplay will be depicted in animation reminiscent of “The Simpsons,” courtesy of motion-tracking technology from NFL’s Next Gen Stats, Sony’s Beyond Sports, and optical tracking from Sony’s Hawk-Eye Innovations. This technology also enables “Simpsons” characters to replace Bengals and Cowboys players occasionally during the game.
On Monday evening, Michael “Spike” Szykowny, ESPN’s Vice President for Editing and Animation, along with David “Sparky” Sparrgrove, ESPN’s Senior Creative Director, will be manning the controls. They will incorporate various elements from “The Simpsons” into the live game. This is a project they’ve been meticulously working on for months.
ESPN producers seem determined to work tirelessly, putting in around-the-clock effort, to pack this CGI football game with as many Simpsons elements as they can manage,” Selman explained. “Spike and Sparky will essentially act like the Phantom of the Opera, constantly adding visual jokes, references, Easter eggs, predictions, humor, and visual cues throughout the game as it unfolds in real-time.
As a die-hard fan, it’s thrilling to know that behind the scenes, NFL ESPN pros are ready with hidden gems – humorous, unexpected pre-tapes – to be dropped during commercial breaks and timeouts. I put my faith in Spike and Sparky. They’re in the booth, fingers poised over control panels, each button they press triggers a different chain of events. One button might unleash ten Ralph Wiggum antics, while another could prompt Krusty to perform his signature act.
Spectators will watch the game unfold at Springfield Atoms stadium. On one side, Moe’s Juice Bar (appropriately family-friendly) is established. On the other side, there’s a Kamp Krusty-inspired setup, featuring video games and skateboard ramps for Bart’s team.
Additionally, you’ll find other pre-prepared segments featuring motivational speeches during halftime by beloved “The Simpsons” characters such as Moe, Krusty, and Lisa. You can also look forward to an animated rendition of ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith delivering some humorous tirades. Keep a keen eye out for a nod towards the famous “Simpsons” prophecy about the future. Moreover, Selman hinted at a surprise celebrity guest from the realm of sports.
Furthermore, Marge and Lisa conducted interviews with real NFL players from both the Dallas Cowboys and Cincinnati Bengals teams, and Selman commented that these athletes were endearing in their responses. He found them quite charming.
Even though the game continues, commentators Mina Kimes and Dan Orlovsky, along with play-by-play announcer Drew Carter, will bring extra life to their analysis, providing a play-by-play commentary inspired by “The Simpsons”.
Selman shared that they provided a guide filled with ‘The Simpsons’ references, along with integrating numerous ‘The Simpsons’ references in the game itself. If there was an award for the most dedicated ‘Simpsons’ enthusiast, Mina would undoubtedly win it. Throughout the week, they’ve been exchanging ideas on crafting intricate ‘The Simpsons’ references to incorporate into the game. We hope this serves as a fun challenge for them to create a ‘Simpsons’-inspired play-by-play and color commentary.
As a dedicated movie buff putting on my sports analyst hat, I’d rephrase it like this: Initially, ESPN anticipated the Cowboys-Bengals showdown to carry significant weight in the season’s later stages. However, with Cincinnati struggling at 4-8 and Dallas not faring much better at 5-7, the heat seems to be dialed down a notch. Yet, I can’t help but feel that interest in the “Simpsons” rematch might just surge under these circumstances.
He remarked, “Currently, it’s an enjoyable game with two teams that didn’t quite reach their peak performance levels.” As for Bart, he somewhat resembles Burrow, and Homer seems to share some similarities with Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy, he pointed out.
As a dedicated cinema enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that come Monday, the brilliant minds behind “The Simpsons” will be glued to the game in their offices – and they won’t be alone! A tantalizing taco truck will be right there with them, adding a dash of excitement to an already momentous week.
On December 17th, a unique special airs where mentalist Derren Brown hypnotizes Homer, causing him to think he’s Santa Claus. This two-part episode includes tunes from Patti LaBelle and Pentatonix, and interestingly enough, it debuts exactly 35 years after the original “The Simpsons” episode, “Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire,” first aired in 1989.
As a passionate cinephile, I’ve never embarked on a solo 40-minute Christmas tale that carries such an intense emotional depth. This production truly feels like a full-fledged film, brimming with the raw emotion of cinema and plenty of laughs to keep you entertained. It’s reminiscent of classic Capra films, and I can confidently say it’s quite a heartwarming special.
