Outsider Pictures Will Bring Venezuela’s 2024 Oscar Submission ‘The Shadow of the Sun’ to U.S. Theaters Next Spring (EXCLUSIVE)

As a lover of cinema that transcends borders and speaks to the human spirit, I am truly excited about the acquisition of “The Shadow of the Sun” by Paul Hudson’s Outsider Pictures. This film, with its powerful narrative and poignant themes, resonates deeply with me, having spent my formative years in a country not unlike Venezuela.

Paul Hudson’s production company, Outsider Pictures, has secured the U.S. cinema distribution rights for “The Shadow of the Sun,” a film directed by Miguel Angel Ferrer and submitted as Venezuela’s entry for the 2024 International Feature Oscar.

“The Sun’s Eclipse” – This narrative follows Alex, a young, deaf individual, who implores his elder brother Leo for companionship in a musical contest. With Leo’s vocal support, Alex embarks on a journey to realize a long-cherished aspiration, one that will challenge his abilities to their utmost extent and scrutinize his endurance in a society less accommodating towards inclusivity.

Ferrer stated that one purpose behind creating this film was to reflect the indomitable spirit of Venezuelans on screen, and he believes it has accomplished this based on the responses received. The narrative has resonated with all Venezuelan viewers, regardless of political beliefs, social standing, sexual identity, religious beliefs, and so forth.

Though the primary storyline in the film is a personal narrative, Ferrer suggests that it delves into broader themes significant to all Venezuelans. In essence, the movie might not appear political at first glance, but beneath its surface, it subtly portrays economic hardships, gang issues, and various challenges that every Venezuelan is intimately familiar with.

Regardless of the obstacles, these characters push forward and reach their destination. Whether they win or lose, that’s the tale shared by many Venezuelans and Latinos around the globe. Our nations face similar challenges such as corruption and hardships, yet we are among the happiest and most resilient people, able to persevere.” He further emphasized.

Created by Magic Films and Multi Studios, “The Shadow of the Sun” had an impressive festival circuit, earning the audience award at the Miami Film Festival, best Latin American feature at Monterrey, a special jury prize at the Seattle Latino Film Festival, and five awards at the Venezuelan Film Festival.

Outsider’s founder and CEO, Hudson, expressed it as a delightful task to introduce a movie like ‘Shadow of the Sun’ in the U.S., not just focusing on expanding the Venezuelan audience but also inviting Latino and arthouse spectators to join this cinematic journey,” explained Hudson about his company’s recent acquisition to EbMaster.

In the spring of 2025, Outsider Pictures intends to release a U.S. cinema run, focusing on the expanding community of Venezuelans residing in the country. As stated by Hudson, Outsider Pictures is dedicated to discovering movies suitable for this particular audience.
