As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the news about Project K has me quite intrigued. Having dabbled in both League of Legends and Magic: The Gathering, I find myself drawn to this new trading card game. With Riot Games aiming for a global rollout next year, it seems they’re not just targeting the original LoL fanbase but also the vast community of Magic fans.
2025 holds significant ambitions for League of Legends from Riot Games, surpassing just the original game. The upcoming trading card game, dubbed Project K and influenced by League of Legends, is set to launch globally in the next year. In a sneak peek video (provided below), Project K appears to target Magic: The Gathering enthusiasts with some distinctly familiar gameplay mechanics.
According to game director Dave Guskin and executive producer Chengran Chai, the multiplayer game Project K allows for 1-on-1 matches but can also host up to four players in either 2 vs 2 or free-for-all contests. In their plans, Riot Games intends to broaden the influence of Project K by collaborating with local stores for events and organizing larger tournaments at a national and international level, featuring top-tier players from around the globe.
It seems that, as of now, Riot Games doesn’t have a publishing and promotional partner within the US TGC (Teamfight Tactics) scene. Consequently, the debut of Project K will first occur in the Chinese market around early 2025. As reported by Polygon, Riot intends for the American launch of Project K to follow closely behind its Chinese counterpart. However, there’s no confirmed date set yet for when Project K will be released in the United States.
Recently, Riot Games addressed criticism from fans regarding Viktor’s new appearance in League of Legends, inspired by Arcane. Starting January 2025, the game will transition to a seasonal model. Although Arcane concluded its run on Netflix last month, more adaptations are planned for the franchise. However, the Russo brothers, who were previously attached to direct a live-action League of Legends movie, will no longer be involved due to creative disagreements that led to the project’s collapse and the payment of $5 million to the directors.
