As a longtime fan of The Witcher series, I can hardly contain my excitement about the upcoming physical version of Gwent! After countless hours spent playing the digital versions and countless more strategizing my moves as Geralt, I’ve finally got the chance to bring the game to my tabletop.
In the realm of The Witcher, Geralt navigates through worlds teeming with beasts, lunatics, and sorcerers. However, when he’s not chasing after any of these, Geralt has a knack for relaxation – a pastime being a round of Gwent. This two-player card game sees competitors donning the role of generals, clashing their armies on the battlefield. A mobile app and free-to-play version on Steam have been previously available, but now, a real-life version of the game is in the works.
Hachette Boardgames UK and fresh publishing company, No Loading Games, are teaming up for the launch of a new game. This game, inspired by the popular Witcher series, will include approximately 400 cards and a playmat designed to recreate an authentic Witcher 3 atmosphere. The rules will offer different versions, ranging from relaxed gameplay to tournament standards.
As an avid fan myself, I can’t help but echo the sentiments of Rob Trounce from Hachette Boardgames UK. He declared that Gwent stands as the most significant ‘game within a game’ ever to grace our media landscape. After a decade-long anticipation, we are thrilled to collaborate with No Loading Games to deliver this cherished game to our tables in an exquisite format. Whether you’re a devotee of Geralt and his escapades or a competitive card game aficionado, Gwent is destined to be one of the most sought-after games of 2025.
The rules for playing this game are straightforward, yet there are multiple ways to emerge victorious. Your success depends on the unique deck you select, each offering distinct benefits. You have four initial choices: Monsters, Nilfgaardian Empire, Northern Realms, and Scoia’tael. The Witcher 3’s Blood and Wine expansion introduced a fifth deck – Skellige. Additionally, there are neutral cards that can be utilized with any of the main decks to enhance their capabilities.
In this game, a match is decided by the best out of three rounds. These rounds are recorded using red gems. If you lose a round, you forfeit one point, and if you lose both, you lose the entire match. A draw means both players lose a point, unless you’re from the Nilfgaardian Empire, who can win matches even when they end in a stalemate.
The entire Gwent game set is priced at around $55 and will arrive in late 2025.
As an eager Witcher fan, I can’t contain my excitement about the upcoming Gwent game, but alas, the wait for The Witcher 4 is a bit longer. Even though it’s in full production, we’re looking at a two-year journey before we can finally get our hands on it.
