As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for horror-action games and a soft spot for the 80s, Deepest Fear has piqued my interest like none other. The blend of body-horror, creature-features, metroidvania, immersive sim, and subversive storytelling is as captivating as a neon sign in a dark alleyway.
At the PC Gaming Show, the creators of the Twin Peaks-inspired adventure game Virginia (from Annapurna) unveiled Deepest Fear – a chilling first-person horror-action title that skillfully combines a captivating array of influences.
Deepest Fear aspires to emulate the unsettling body-horror and creature elements of ’80s horror classics such as The Thing, The Abyss, and The Fly, blending them with gaming influences that have also gained widespread appreciation. Variable State labels the game a hybrid of immersive sim and metroidvania genres, drawing inspiration from games like Metroid Prime, System Shock 2, and Dead Space to shape its unique world.
Seven miles beneath the sea, players find themselves immersed in Deepest Fear, a game that places them as Danni Carroll, a survivor onboard the submerged Neptune facility. This underwater complex is home to terrifying creatures that rise from the ocean depths, posing threats not only to Danni but also others she meets during her harrowing journey. The Neptune is filling with water, creating numerous chances for these monstrous entities to attack.
Although this new project appears quite different from their previous narrative-adventure games, Variable State assures that it still upholds their signature approach to storytelling known as “confrontational storytelling.” Additionally, it’s not the most unexpected venture since they also plan to self-publish Polaris, a cooperative shooter featuring a cel-shaded visual style, which they are working on for 2025.
The game Deepest Fear is set to debut on PC initially, however, they mentioned that details regarding other platforms will be disclosed at a later time.
