As a seasoned cinephile who’s had the pleasure of witnessing the rise and fall of countless celluloid stories, I must say that the upcoming documentary “The Life & Times of Liz Carpenter” has piqued my interest like few others before it. A journalist, White House aide, women’s rights champion, and co-founder of the National Women’s Political Caucus, Liz Carpenter was not just a trailblazer but a beacon of hope for countless women in politics.
During Women’s History Month, the documentary “Liz Carpenter: Her Life and Times” is set to debut on public television stations nationwide in March. You can also watch it online on PBS.org and through the PBS app.
This hour-long documentary, helmed by Peabody award-winning director Abby Ginzberg and Christy Carpenter, Liz’s daughter, chronicles the compelling narrative of Liz Carpenter – a remarkable journalist, influential White House advisor, and champion for women’s rights.
Liz Carpenter served as both chief of staff and press secretary for First Lady Johnson and subsequently co-founded the National Women’s Political Caucus, advocating for female political candidates. Additionally, she co-chaired ERAmerica and spearheaded efforts to have state legislatures approve the equal rights amendment.
This documentary showcases conversations with Gloria Steinem, Dan Rather, Bill Moyers, Douglas Brinkley, ex-congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson, and Lyndon B. Johnson’s daughters Luci Baines Johnson and Lynda Johnson Robb. It additionally presents home videos that have not been publicly viewed before.
Ginzberg expressed delight about sharing Liz’s vibrant and influential story on public television in March next year. He noted that during film festivals and university screenings, people of diverse ages and backgrounds have shown great enthusiasm for Liz’s unwavering optimism. They find her indomitable spirit incredibly inspiring, as it serves as a reminder that ‘the struggle continues, but we persevere in the fight.’
The film was officially screened at several prestigious festivals, including SXSW, DOC NYC, DC/Dox, Virginia Film Festival, Dallas International Film Festival, DocLands, and Woods Hole Film Festival. It also received accolades at the Hill Country Film Festival and Toronto International Women Film Festival.
In that project, I functioned as the executive producer, with Jessica Brannon-Wranosky and Joan Douglas Murray contributing significantly as associate producers.
