As a movie aficionado with over three decades of immersion in Stephen King‘s intricate and terrifying universe, I must say that “The Institute” has piqued my interest to no end. Having followed King’s work since his Carrie days, I can confidently say that the dark and twisted tales he weaves have a unique ability to both captivate and disturb audiences.
At Content London on Thursday, MGM gave a sneak peek into their forthcoming thriller television show titled “The Institute,” which is an adaptation of the 2019 novel by Stephen King.
At the gathering featuring Michael Wright (head of MGM+), Jack Bender (director and executive producer of “The Institute”), and Benjamin Cavell (creator and executive producer), they displayed a complete trailer for the series, along with a quick preview of MGM+’s upcoming projects in 2025. For the first time, it was announced that Stephen King has joined the project as an executive producer.
The trailer offers a glimpse into the very Institute itself, a concrete, brutalist structure, which serves as a home for children endowed with telekinetic abilities – these kids have been inexplicably kidnapped. In this initial look, we find Luke, portrayed by Joe Freeman, a fresh talent, interacting with other youngsters and encountering the antagonist, Ms. Sigsby, played by Mary-Louise Parker, for the first time. During these encounters, she assures him that his actions are beneficial for the world while he is connected to machines and compelled to manipulate objects.
In the trailer, an ominous Parker remarks, “You’re not children, not here. There are no bedtimes or chores,” as scenes depicting the kids in distress flicker by. However, he warns, “But here, if you disobey a rule, there will be adult repercussions.
The actors in “The Institute” are Ben Barnes, Simone Miller, Jason Diaz, Hannah Galway, and Julian Richings.
In Stephen King’s initial book, Luke was 12, but for the TV series adaptation, his age was increased along with many other characters. Bender, who collaborated with King on “Mr. Mercedes” and directed episodes from “Lost” and “Game of Thrones,” clarified during a panel why this change was made.
He expressed that they were keen to avoid making this difficult situation even more distressing for the children involved. They aimed to prevent it from becoming an unpleasant ordeal, and certainly did not wish to create a torturous experience. As authors, they understood the delicate balance and had no intention of crossing that line.
Cavell pointed out that “The Institute” shares a connection with King’s fictional world, as the kids in the narrative exhibit similar psychic talents, much like those demonstrated by Danny Torrance from “The Shining,” which I refer to as ‘manifestations of ‘The Shine.’
According to Cavell, certain children known as ‘The Shine’ are being abducted by an enigmatic group we can’t fully grasp. However, instead of relying on an outside savior, these kids manage to free themselves. They do so by uniting and using their own intelligence and resourcefulness to escape the situation.
Additionally, Wright hinted at MGM+’s plan to release episodes of “The Institute” on a weekly basis to foster regular viewership, and mentioned that talks about a possible second season are already underway. Wright stated, “The ending of ‘The Institute’ Season 1 is quite emotionally satisfying, but it also paves the way for some exciting storylines in Season 2.
