The Challenge 40: Battle of the Eras Recap: Send Me an Angel

As a longtime viewer of The Challenge, I must say that this season is proving to be quite interesting, with its unique cast dynamics and unexpected twists. Watching Michele celebrate her birthday in such an unconventional yet heartwarming manner was a refreshing change from the usual drama-filled festivities we’ve come to expect.

In each episode of “The Challenge 40“, they pay tribute to the show’s 26-year legacy by including a flashback clip from a previous season in the opening. Sometimes, these sneak peeks reveal too much about what’s coming next, leading me to anticipate a shocking betrayal this week. Unfortunately, I was mistaken as the scene of Sarah deceiving Bananas from “Battle of The Exes II” didn’t signal an upcoming blindside, but rather marked the beginning of Bananas’ villainous reputation.

We’ve reached a significant phase in the competition, but it hasn’t been particularly exciting so far. The feud between Bananas and Tori + Michele seems exaggerated and more about show than substance, and the confrontation between Cara Maria and Laurel was edited poorly, making it hard to understand and just too harsh for the usual entertaining brawls on ‘The Challenge’. However, “Your dad owns a bakery!” never fails to delight.

This week’s location for the contestants is a remote area in the Vietnam jungle. Upon their arrival, they find that T.J., who usually greets them, is nowhere to be seen. They huddle together, discussing the situation quietly. I suspect Cory might yell, “If T.J. doesn’t appear within the next quarter of an hour, we have the right to depart.” Suddenly, leaves start rustling and T.J. emerges from a hidden trapdoor in the ground, much like in the movie ‘Night of the Living Dead’. The old T.J., with his flair for grand entrances, would typically choose Michael Bay-style helicopter arrivals to uphold his tough image. However, the new T.J. and his casual dad attire seem unfazed by such concerns.

“Tight Quarters Challenge

Tori is the one who ventures first into the pitch-black area, yelling, “Visualize lean thoughts!” as she goes. If you’ve got a curvaceous figure like Kim Kardashian, it’s game over for you – instant disqualification. It’s so dark the players claim they can’t even see their own hands in front of their faces, and the atmosphere is reminiscent of playing the game Slenderman: The Eight Pages, where your flashlight diminishes while a figure in a suit stalks you through the woods. The participants can hear Tori screaming as bats flit past her, but she emerges unscathed back into daylight and excels at solving the block puzzle, setting a tough benchmark for the rest of the day.

In the current season of The Challenge, Tori is the leading female contestant, whereas Bananas, her male counterpart, is struggling significantly more. He openly admits that his poor performance in puzzles has been his undoing this time around. Although he manages to complete the initial puzzle swiftly, similar to what most school-aged children would do, things start to unravel at the T.J. station. The Challenge gods have introduced a twist, making some of the block pieces double-sided. Bananas attempts various combinations, expressing frustration that he has pieces for both a soft smile and a grin. In his desperation, he even knocks over the puzzle stand when T.J. informs him he’s timed out. His stay in the tunnels was roughly eight minutes long, so he can’t blame heat stroke or exhaustion to explain away his lack of skill.

In the end, Bananas, who came in last, couldn’t shield his vulnerable teammates Jenny and Aviv, as they were marked by Michele this week. However, no amount of heroism from a super-ripe Banana could have saved Aviv from her own mistakes. With hopes pinned on a challenge that would play to the strengths of a compact character like Polly Pocket, luck seemed to be on her side. Yet, her exceptional speed through tunnels, reminiscent of a steroid-infused rodent, ultimately proved to be her downfall. She mistakenly veered off course, moving aside two ‘X’ markers and appearing more than a mile away from the track, resulting in disqualification and immediate elimination for her.

Tori clinches victory for the women, while Kyland reigns supreme once more among the men. I have no problem with Kyland himself; he’s good-looking and all that, but I question why he’s on reality TV again. These new male competitors like Kyland and Horacio are undeniably fit, excel in challenges, and sport chiseled, godlike abs. However, they seem to lack the star power needed for wider recognition. It seems that if you aren’t at least 25% controversial, your only television appearances should be limited to shows like The Great British Baking Show or the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Kyland’s win guarantees safety for Michele, the last player who actively supported him, as she won’t have to face her against her in the game. This leaves Jenny with a tough choice. As a bonus, Michele can enjoy her birthday without the fear of being attacked by Jenny! Her friends, Derek, Cara, and Tori, arrange a secret party for her away from the rest of the house, a smart decision given Michele’s strained relations with the angels who are sulking in their room, finding comfort in their unique feet.

Every party on The Challenge lately seems to transform into an impromptu drag performance. First, Michele gets treated to a captivating dance by Cara’s drag persona, Karl, in a private setting. Later, she’s led to a bedroom adorned with pink balloons and unicorn motifs. In an unprecedented move for The Challenge, production brings back her boyfriend, Devin, as a surprise – only it turns out to be Tori disguised as Devin, moving rhythmically on Michele’s bed. Despite the fact that living in a Challenge house would likely be unbearable most of the time, I find myself enchanted by their creative ways of organizing celebrations and showing affection for each other. It’s far more whimsical and lasting than a stiff formal dinner at an expensive restaurant where a cheeseburger costs $27.

Once more, the Chamber’s gathering proved swift and insignificant, yet Tori seized the moment to garner attention on television. She posed a hypothetical query to Aviv and Jenny: If given the choice by Bananas, who would he supposedly save between the two of them? True to form, Jenny swiftly defended Bananas, asserting that all three of them functioned as a united front, and she wouldn’t mind at all if he favored Aviv over her. It often happens in an open relationship that one individual is shamelessly enjoying the perks while another is deeply in denial about their feelings.

Everyone makes their way into the arena, encountering a large, triangular cage with a foreboding red ball in its center (commonly known as Cara’s usual Saturday night setting). If I were Aviv, I might offer Kyland the promise of my eldest child’s soul (or perhaps even the third or fourth, given the circumstances) if he would betray Michele. Despite their vastly different proportions, Jenny feigns not considering Aviv as a threat in her pre-game interview to maintain humility.

As a cinephile, I find myself often immersed in the thrilling world of miniature soccer games. In this captivating scenario, two adversaries stand at opposite corners of a triangle, their eyes gleaming with determination. The objective: grab hold of the hefty ten-pound ball and make a break for it.

Aviv realizes she can’t outperform Jenny on defense, instead needing to focus on speed. However, knowing something and applying it are two different matters entirely. In this case, Jenny acts like the Demogorgon, while Aviv is often compared to a chihuahua, making it no shock that Aviv rarely gets an opportunity to attempt scoring.

It’s an obvious knockout for Jenny, winning 2-0. Tasked with picking targets, she chooses the three men available to her outside of beloved cult leader Bananas, selecting Jordan, Cory, and Derek. Aviv takes her loss in stride, having made an impressively deep run on her first Challenge in 18 years. Is FanDuel taking bets on who she left her Karma Points to?
