As a passionate cinephile who has traversed the globe for the love of cinema, I must say that my anticipation for “Girls Will Be Girls” is palpable! Having attended numerous film festivals across continents, witnessing this Indo-French coming-of-age drama’s award-winning journey from Sundance to MAMI Mumbai has been nothing short of awe-inspiring.
Prime Video has secured a streaming launch for Shuchi Talati’s Indian maturation tale “Girls Will Be Girls,” after its successful festival journey. This Indo-French collaboration is the first project from Pushing Buttons Studios, the production company founded by Indian performers Richa Chadha and Ali Fazal.
At Sundance 2024, I was captivated by a film that not only took home two awards, but also the Audience Award in the World Cinema Dramatic Category. This remarkable production follows the journey of an 18-year-old named Mira, as she navigates her adolescence amidst her mother’s own unresolved experiences of growing up. I found myself deeply moved by this poignant portrayal of generational growth and self-discovery.
For the first time at the helm, director Talati, who penned the script himself, unites debutants Preeti Panigrahi and Kesav Binoy Kiron in the main roles. The talented Kani Kusruti completes the ensemble cast. This innovative venture stemmed from a joint effort by Pushing Buttons Studios, Dolce Vita Films, and Crawling Angel Films. Chadha, Claire Chassagne, and Talati took on the producing duties, while Fazal served as executive producer.
Following its premiere at Sundance, the movie gained momentum, appearing at various festivals such as Goteborg, Karlovy Vary, El Gouna, and the Jogja-Netpac Asian Film Festival. It accumulated numerous accolades, including the Grand Jury Prize at the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles, best film honors at both the Jakarta International Festival and Biarritz Film Festival, and the Transilvania Trophy at the Transilvania International Film Festival. Additionally, it garnered three awards during its premiere in India at the MAMI Mumbai Film Festival.
Manish Menghani, content licensing director at Prime Video India, explained that acquiring this specific title aligns with their platform’s goal to expand its content variety. He referred to it as a “movie about young adulthood” that delves into the distinctive challenges, discoveries, and complexities faced by individuals in this stage of life. Chadha emphasized the film’s examination of conflicts between generations and the quest for independence, while Fazal pointed out that this project marks their production company’s initial foray into filmmaking.
Starting from December 18th, the movie will be available for streaming, expanding Prime Video India’s collection of local content that already includes originals such as “Citadel: Honey Bunny,” “Mirzapur,” and “The Family Man.” In an effort to diversify its Indian film offerings, the streaming platform has been actively acquiring both direct-to-service titles and post-theatrical releases in various languages.
