As a long-time cartoon enthusiast who’s witnessed the rise and fall (and rise again) of many animated series, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia when hearing that “Family Guy” is coming back to Adult Swim in 2025. It’s like revisiting an old friend you haven’t seen in years, only to find out they’ve been up to their usual shenanigans.

“Family Guy” is returning to Adult Swim.

In 2025, the popular Seth MacFarlane animated series is scheduled to resume its run on late-night television. The comeback begins on New Year’s Day with a continuous three-day marathon starting at 7 p.m. (ET/PT), ending at 5 a.m. Subsequent episodes will air every weeknight, from 10:00 – 11:30 p.m. (ET/PT).

Family Guy,” initially debuted on Fox in 1999, but it was unfortunately canceled after its first three seasons due to poor viewership numbers. However, the up-and-coming Adult Swim started airing re-runs of the series, which garnered significant audience support. This, along with strong DVD box set sales, persuaded Fox to bring back the show in 2005. Now, it’s in its 23rd season and has aired holiday specials on Hulu on Oct. 14 and Nov. 25. The rest of the season is planned for release on Fox in 2025.

After the licensing period ended in 2021, “Family Guy” stopped airing on Adult Swim. Reruns of the show were then transferred to FXX and it became their exclusive cable network for its off-air broadcasts. However, a recent deal with Adult Swim is not exclusive, allowing reruns to still be shown elsewhere.

The animated sitcom “Family Guy” centers around the eccentric and troubled Griffin family, residing in their home in Quahog, Rhode Island. Peter (MacFarlane), who seems to live oblivious to most things, shares his life with his homemaker wife Lois (Alexandrea Borstein). Their brood consists of Meg (Mila Kunis), the socially unpopular teenager, Chris (Seth Green), the awkward adolescent, Stewie (MacFarlane), a clever baby with a penchant for homicide, and Brian (MacFarlane), their intelligent, martini-drinking canine companion.

Family Guy’s early history was significantly shaped by Adult Swim, and we’re thrilled that the series will be back in our programming lineup in 2025,” shared Michael Ouweleen, President of Adult Swim. “Having Family Guy on our screens again is a fantastic addition to the exceptional lineup of original animated shows we have lined up for next year.
