As a seasoned movie buff with a penchant for reality TV and a keen eye for industry trends, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement at the prospect of yet another spinoff of “Love Island.” David George, the man behind the reimagined “Queer Eye” and the award-winning “Alone,” seems to have struck gold again with this hit U.K. reality dating format.
A new “Love Island” spinoff could be on the way from ITV America and Peacock.
At Content London on Tuesday, ITV America CEO David George, who played a key role in selling the popular UK reality dating show format to CBS in 2018, hinted that he is currently negotiating a new adaptation of the series with Peacock. Known as “Love Island,” this show achieved its most successful U.S. run ever during its sixth season and has already produced two spinoffs: “Love Island All Stars” and “Love Island Games.
George expressed his thoughts on Comcast’s proposed separation of NBCUniversal’s linear networks: “From my perspective, this division implies that Peacock represents the future since they retained Bravo, a significant content provider for Peacock. Moreover, if you consider their branding, Peacock is designed to be enjoyable and entertaining, which resonates strongly with us. In fact, we are engaged in discussions about a potential third spinoff of ‘Love Island’ with them, underscoring the value of this brand for their streaming service.
Peacock did not immediately respond to EbMaster‘s request for comment.
At ITV America, George is in charge of ITV Entertainment, Leftfield Pictures, Sirens Media, Thinkfactory Media, High Noon Entertainment, and Good Caper Content. While he has been there, he’s also created the hugely popular reboot of “Queer Eye” for Netflix and the acclaimed survival series “Alone” for the History Channel.
George mentioned that “Love Island” stands out as a unique success story of attracting both large viewership and scheduled viewing on a streaming platform. He added that this has not been accomplished previously, and the show’s popularity made it essential viewing on a streaming service. This is a remarkable trend in the marketplace, as streaming services are beginning to resemble traditional linear networks.
As a movie reviewer, I’ve been reflecting on the current entertainment landscape, and George’s insight is quite striking. To stand out in this overcrowded market, you need ideas that are not just strong, but undeniable. In other words, concepts that can’t be ignored or dismissed.
He stated that there’s no demand left for the remaining options, but rather it’s the top 10% of concepts that have the potential to truly stand out.
