As a passionate film enthusiast who’s spent countless hours immersed in the mesmerizing world of cinema, I can’t help but feel an exhilarating sense of anticipation upon learning about the Indonesia France Film Lab. With my heart pulsating like a drum and my eyes sparkling with uncontainable excitement, I find myself yearning to be part of this extraordinary initiative that promises to bring together emerging projects from Southeast Asia, Europe, and France.
The Indonesian Ministry of Culture and the French Embassy have debuted the initial Indonesia-France Film Lab during the premier JAFF Market, which is happening from December 3rd to 5th in conjunction with the first Jogja-Netpac Asian Film Festival (JAFF).
Six projects are chosen to participate in an intense four-day workshop, offering mentorship from a distinguished group of global film industry professionals. Notable figures like Indonesian filmmaker Makbul Mubarak, whose debut feature “Autobiography” was a multi-national collaboration, and French producer Louise Bellicaud from In Vivo Films will take on leadership roles in these groups.
Besides Rachid Hami, a renowned French film director, Sébastien Chesneau from Cercamon, Eiko Mizuno, a Japanese producer, Fernanda Renno, a distributor, and Tan Si En, a Singaporean producer are also participating as mentors. These individuals are offering advice on potential collaborative production ventures between Southeast Asia, Europe, and France.
Selected projects include:
“First Breath After Coma” (Studio Antelope/BASE) is directed by Jason Iskandar and produced by Florence Giovanni, telling a story about three Chinese-Indonesian siblings struggling with their father’s coma during a time of political change in the late 1990s. In simpler terms, it’s the journey of three siblings dealing with their father’s coma while witnessing political changes in Indonesia at the end of the 1990s.
The film ‘Pasar Malam’ by directors Andrew Kose and Evi Cecilia focuses on a mother’s quest for understanding following her daughter’s suicide, as she reminisces about her own turbulent teenage years in the city of Medan during the 1990s.
The film titled “Partus” (Foolfeel Films) by director Guruh Nusantara and producer Dewangkoro Rinugroho centers around a young midwife who comes back to her hometown, setting up her practice while also taking care of an unwell mother. This situation compels her to deal with competition from a long-standing traditional midwife in the village.
“Sides of a Coin” by Grace Stefany, produced by Susanti Dewi and Sarah Rostia Debby, delves into the aftermath of a watch shop owner’s demise in 1980s Indonesia. This tragic event uncovers outstanding obligations that compel his bereaved kin to manage an illicit gambling operation.
Fly!” (Directed by Pelixiano, Produced by Ellen Xie), tells the story of a sorrowful Balinese child on a quest, venturing into the spirit world in an attempt to reconnect with his deceased father.
“Anak (Kwaaak!)” by directors Anggun Priambodo and Suryo Wiyogo narrates a tale about kids venturing against their parents’ decisions, aiming to participate in a remote festival, all the while overcoming obstacles within untamed wilderness.
This endeavor is primarily driven by film producer Yulia Evina Bhara, known for her works like “Autobiography” and “Tiger Stripes,” as well as Vivian Idris. They receive backing from APROFI (Indonesian Film Producers Association) and Institut Français Indonesié.
