Audiences were thrilled when the latest installment finally arrived in cinemas. And there’s good news for fans – director Joachim Rønning is already thinking about a fourth *Tron* movie.
In a recent interview with GamesRadar+, director Joachim Rønning discussed the meaning behind the post-credits scene in the new film. He explained that bringing back the character Sark was a big moment for the visual effects team at Industrial Light & Magic. They were excited to revisit the original Tron Grid, which Rønning described as a landmark achievement in VFX, even though it wasn’t considered eligible for an award in 1982 because of its innovative techniques.
Ronning also mentioned bringing back the character of Sark, even at the film’s conclusion, as a way to suggest future storylines. He believes Julian Dillinger’s portrayal of the character is a strong foundation for continuing that arc. The director expressed his gratitude to audiences, acknowledging the uncertainty of success in today’s market and hoping enough people would see the film for it to potentially continue.
The story centers on Eve Kim (Greta Lee), the ambitious and innovative CEO of Kevin Flynn’s company, ENCOM. When Eve begins searching for a special code that allows programs to become truly alive, she starts a series of events that could blur the line between humans and artificial intelligence. Currently, AIs can only exist outside the digital world, known as the Grid, for 29 minutes. But if Eve succeeds, this code would allow them to live indefinitely as independent beings.
The Stars of Tron: Ares Are Excited About A Potential Sequel
The situation gets complicated when Ares (Jared Leto) decides he wants to be human and rebels against his maker to safeguard Eve. Leto expressed his enthusiasm for the *Tron* franchise, saying, “I’d love to see *Tron* become a yearly or bi-yearly event, like revisiting a favorite album. It’s special to work on something you genuinely enjoy as a fan – we’re part of the audience too, and we care deeply about it.”
Lee expressed similar enthusiasm for a follow-up film. He explained that there’s a lot more story to tell, and because the movie deals with current events, a sequel would have the opportunity to reflect how things change. He’s eager to see what those changes will be and hopes the next film can capture them, acknowledging the complexities of the world.
The film didn’t perform well during its opening weekend and received mixed reviews from critics, currently holding a 57% score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, audiences seem to enjoy it much more, giving it an 87% rating – a significant difference. Critics have praised the film’s stunning visuals and music, calling it ‘a sensory feast,’ but found the story itself to be somewhat lacking in emotional depth.
Tron: Ares is currently playing in theaters worldwide.
