As a fervent supporter of TelevisaUnivision and someone who has followed its transformative journey closely, I am thrilled to witness Daniel Alegre’s strategic leadership unfold. His vision for a unified global company is not only inspiring but also crucial in today’s rapidly evolving media landscape.

The head of the massive Spanish-speaking media company, TelevisaUnivision, announced plans to reorganize his leadership team and reduce staff. This action, he explained, is intended to bolster our competitive edge for the years leading up to 2025 and beyond.

In a memo distributed on Monday, newly appointed CEO Daniel Alegre expressed his intention to break down barriers between various types of media and collaborate more intimately with our clients. He emphasized that as our partners’ requirements adapt, we must offer them unique services that no other competitor in the market can provide, stating, “We need to meet their evolving needs in a way that sets us apart.

Consequently, Alegre announced plans to restructure certain teams. José Luis Fabila was appointed to oversee all content endeavors and establish a fresh international organization with a clear objective. “José Luis will ensure that our content expenditures correspond with our company’s scope, audience engagement, and monetization targets, while being effectively distributed across all global platforms using the optimal windowing strategy,” said Alegre. “This is an enticing prospect to enhance how we present top-notch content to our worldwide audiences.

Jesús Lara, the head of our local operations in the U.S., is stepping down from TelevisaUnivision. From now on, both U.S. ad sales, whether local or national, will be managed centrally by Donna Speciale. Ignacio Meyer will take charge of U.S. audio and local programming in addition to his current responsibilities. Lastly, Rafael Urbina, who is the COO of our ViX streaming service, will now supervise all digital and streaming operations.

The action represents the most significant step taken by Alegre since he assumed control of the company. He succeeded Wade Davis, who was previously the chief financial officer at Viacom before leaving to head the acquisition of a financially strapped Univision from Haim Saban and investors towards the end of 2020. Subsequently, he navigated it through a merger with its primary partner and content provider, Grupo Televisa based in Mexico, in 2022.

In line with the planned restructuring, it’s anticipated that TelevisaUnivision will reduce its staff by a mid-to-high single-digit percentage, as suggested by someone privy to the situation.

In October, Alegre expressed his plans to dismantle organizational barriers within the corporation, a result of the merger between the U.S.’s Univision TV network and Mexico’s Televisa content-production business. Having been around for over six decades, these entities boast a vast history, extensive library, and well-known branding. However, they also carry deeply ingrained operational methods. During a call with investors in October, Alegre noted that this presents an opportunity to transform from two regional companies into a single global enterprise. He further emphasized the need for the company to move beyond having separate linear and streaming divisions, aiming instead to become a content-focused organization that is adaptable across various platforms.
