As a cinephile with a penchant for Nordic Noir and a soft spot for strong female leads, I am absolutely ecstatic about the upcoming TV adaptation of Eva Björg Ægisdóttir’s “Elma” series. Having had the pleasure of immersing myself in the captivating world of Icelandic literature, I can attest to the unique blend of atmospheric settings and gripping narratives that this island nation offers.
The popular crime series “Elma” by Eva Björg Ægisdóttir will be turned into a television show, as the Icelandic production company Glassriver has acquired the rights to adapt it.
The story unfolds around Elma, a police detective, as she resumes duty at the local precinct in her quaint homeland of Akranes, Iceland, following a love affair that took a turn for the worse, compelling her to leave.
In a quiet Icelandic village shrouded in mystery, the discovery of a woman’s body at the base of a lighthouse may uncover long-buried truths. Could redemption for Elma, a local resident, arrive through the help of her fellow townsperson, Saevar?
The initial novel of the series goes by the name “The Creak on the Stairs,” and its sequel is called “Girls Who Live.” The works of author Ægisdóttir have been translated into a total of 23 languages, but it’s in France where the series has really gained traction, reaching more than 100,000 readers.
David Headley from D H H Literary Agency collaborated on the agreement alongside The Artists Partnership during the negotiation process.
Glassriver boasts a broad collection of scripted works, such as the crime drama “Black Sands,” and is currently working on more than 20 additional television and movie projects in various genres, including comedy and science fiction.
Andri Ómarsson, co-owner and producer at Glassriver, is excited about collaborating with Eva and Karen on ‘Elma.’ This project combines Iceland’s breathtaking scenery with a suspenseful crime tale that has left global audiences spellbound, from Iceland to France, the U.K., and beyond. The story’s success underscores the power of Icelandic narrative, and we anticipate it will strike a chord with both local and international viewers. Karen’s writing skills will breathe life into this tale on screen. With a committed cast and creative team, we are convinced that Elma will enthrall audiences and showcase the best of Icelandic drama.
Ægisdóttir expressed her excitement: “I’m absolutely ecstatic that Glassriver is adapting ‘Elma’ for television! I’ve been eagerly waiting for the perfect moment, and I firmly believe that with Glassriver’s skilled and competent team, ‘Elma’ will be in capable hands. Karen is one of Iceland’s most gifted and prolific scriptwriters in recent years. Hearing her vision for the series has me buzzing with anticipation to contribute to this project and see how it unfolds.
