As a passionate sports enthusiast who’s witnessed the evolution of women’s soccer over the years, I can confidently say that the NWSL has truly outdone itself this season! The 2024 National Women’s Soccer League Championship game was nothing short of a spectacle, breaking records left and right for both TV viewership and in-person attendance.
The Orlando Pride’s 1-0 win against the Washington Spirit to secure the 2024 National Women’s Soccer League title marked the end of a season that saw significant increases – even up to three digits – in TV audience and stadium attendance for the league.
On November 23, the game broadcast live on CBS and streamed on Paramount+ from Kansas City’s CPKC Stadium attracted an average of 967,900 viewers, with a peak of 1.1 million viewers. The number of television viewers increased by 18% compared to last year’s match (816,800 viewers) and climbed by 6% from the all-time high for NWSL championship game viewership, which was set in 2022 (915,000).
In the 2024 season, the NWSL saw a significant increase in television viewership, with a remarkable surge of 567% during their March to November period. Using the NWSL’s calculations, the combined audience for both regular and post-season matches reached an impressive 24 million viewers, taking into account pre-show broadcasts on the Ion network as well.
The NWSL’s seven post-season games drew an average of 562,900 viewers on linear platforms for a total audience of 4.6 million across the playoffs. Three 2024 regular season games rank in the top 5 most-watched NWSL games of all time, led by the Oct. 6, 2023, OL Reign-Gotham FC game that marked the final match of superstar player Megan Rapinoe (683,000 viewers).
The increased viewership can be partially attributed to the league’s stronger partnerships with its media outlets.
In the beginning of this sports season, our aim with the innovative media agreements was to reshape our worth and to make more of our games accessible in locations and environments where enthusiasts engage with content, mentioned Jessica Berman, NWSL commissioner. The impressive coverage over CBS platforms last weekend, featuring a groundbreaking broadcast from CPKC Stadium on ‘CBS Mornings’, record-breaking match viewership, and the most viewed NWSL event to date, is a testament to our endeavors to expand and diversify our audience. We’ve managed to bring the thrill of the NWSL to an unprecedented number of fans, all thanks to our partnership with CBS, making this excitement more accessible than ever before.
For the first time ever, the total attendance for in-person spectators during the NWSL’s 12th season surpassed 2 million, marking a significant increase of 47% compared to last year. The 2024 season saw an impressive rise with 91 games that attracted over 10,000 fans each, representing a substantial jump of 65% from the previous year. Remarkably, 13 out of the 14 NWSL teams managed to draw crowds exceeding 10,000 in 2024.
