Nintendo Switch Online Adds Three Genesis Games, Including Some Leaving Steam

As a gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a wave of nostalgia upon hearing about these beloved classics from the Sega Genesis era making their way onto the Nintendo Switch. ToeJam & Earl, Vectorman, and Mercs were staples of my youth, games that occupied countless hours of my life as I navigated their pixelated worlds and battled their unique challenges.

It’s true that many titles from the 16-bit console era aren’t easily accessible for legal play, but luckily, three additional games from Sega Genesis are now coming to the Nintendo Switch: ToeJam & Earl in Panic on Funkotron, Vectorman, and Mercs. Starting today, you can get your hands on these games. The news was shared by Nintendo and they even released a short trailer showcasing all three games.

In 1993, ToeJam & Earl in Panic on Funkotron, the initial sequel of the series, was introduced for Genesis. The extraterrestrial characters, ToeJam and Earl, had been stranded on Earth previously. However, this time they’re returning to their home planet in Panic on Funkotron, where fresh challenges lie ahead. Unwittingly, a group of humans have joined them on their voyage to Funkotron. It’s the responsibility of ToeJam and Earl to rectify the situation in this side-scrolling adventure game.

1995 saw the release of the innovative game, Vectorman, considered cutting-edge for its time and a Genesis counterpart to Donkey Kong Country on Super Nintendo. Developed by BlueSky Software, it boasted pre-rendered 3D models that set it apart from other Genesis action-platformers. The narrative of the game shares some resemblance with Pixar’s WALL-E, as Earth has been deserted by humans who left behind robots to clean up their waste. However, the plot takes a different turn when one of the robots transforms into the nuclear-powered despot WarHead, making Vectorman the last robot on Earth not under his command.

Originally developed and launched by Capcom, “Mercs” (also known as “Wolf of the Battlefield: Mercs”) arrived on Sega Genesis in 1990. This action game allows up to three players to take charge of the undercover mercenaries within Wolf Force. Their objective is to infiltrate a fictitious African nation called Zutula, and rescue the ex-President who has been captured by rebels attempting to seize power over the land.

Among the many games being removed from Steam in December by Sega are ToeJam & Earl in Panic on Funkotron and Vectorman. Simultaneously, Sega has introduced a fresh line of merchandise based on Genesis games at Amazon. Additionally, Sega is planning to resurrect five of its iconic series: Jet Set Radio, Shinobi, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, and Crazy Taxi.
