As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I can’t help but feel a twinge of excitement when I hear about a new game that seems to blend elements from some of my all-time favorites. With Ubisoft reportedly working on Alterra, an Animal Crossing-inspired voxel world, it seems like the perfect amalgamation of the charm of Animal Crossing, the creativity of Minecraft, and the quirky characters of Funko Pops.
It appears that Ubisoft is rumored to be developing a video game reminiscent of Animal Crossing, titled Alterra. In this game, players have the opportunity to establish their residence on an island populated by creatures known as “Matterlings.” Leaving home allows for exploration of various biomes, encountering Matterlings and gathering resources scattered across the wider surroundings.
Initially, it was Insider Gaming that broke the news about Alterra’s development. As per the report, this game employs voxels to create its virtual environment. For those who aren’t familiar, voxel graphics consist of displaying cubes on a grid similar to Minecraft. Additionally, Alterra is slated to incorporate building and crafting mechanics that allow players to build objects and locations using resources they discover within the game world. The report suggests that Alterra was derived from a previous project that also utilized voxel graphics but was ultimately cancelled.
According to Insider Gaming, they’ve allegedly come across pictures of Alterra’s NPCs, which are said to be reminiscent of Funko Pop figures, featuring oversized heads in a voxel design. Some Matterlings appear similar to mythical creatures such as dragons, while others resemble real-life animals like birds and polar bears.
According to the latest update, it appears that Alterra is being built at Ubisoft Montreal. Previously known as the lead on Gotham Knights, Patrick Redding now serves as the project’s creative director. Fabien Lhéraud, who has been with Ubisoft in various marketing, branding, and media roles for over two decades, is currently leading Alterra as its producer. The report suggests that development of this game commenced 18 months ago and it may still be several years before its release.
