Earl Holliman, Star of ‘The Rainmaker,’ ‘Forbidden Planet,’ Dies at 96

As a seasoned movie critic with over four decades of film appreciation under my belt, I can confidently say that Earl Holliman was a true gem of the silver screen. His career spanned across six decades, gracing us with his presence in iconic films like “Giant,” “Forbidden Planet,” and the unforgettable “The Rainmaker.


96-year-old Earl Holliman, the charismatic actor who was awarded a Golden Globe for his supporting performance in “The Rainmaker” and starred in numerous Westerns as well as films like “Giant” and “Forbidden Planet,” passed away on Monday in Studio City.

His partner Craig Curtis announced his death.

Holliman also starred in the first episode of “The Twilight Zone” in 1959.

Later on, Curtis shared that in a letter to Holliman, Serling had praised him by saying, “Your acting was exceptional, rich with depth, nuance, and a remarkable authenticity. To put it simply, Holliman, you’re an exceptional actor!” or “Curtis relayed that in a letter to Holliman, Serling complimented him stating, ‘You gave an outstanding performance, brimming with layers, subtlety, and convincing realism. In essence, Holliman, you’re a fantastic actor!’

He’s also been featured in films such as “Broken Lance,” “The Bridges at Toko-Ri,” “Gunfight at the O.K. Corral,” “Don’t Go Near the Water,” “Last Train from Gun Hill,” “The Sons of Katie Elder,” and “Sharky’s Machine.

On TV, he often starred in “Police Woman,” and made appearances in both “Hotel de Paree” and “Wide Country.

He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1977.
