‘Cobra Kai’ Stars Tease an ‘Unexpected, Uplifting’ Finale as the Show Prepares to End Its Six-Season Run

As a lifelong connoisseur of cinematic masterpieces, who has witnessed the rise and fall of countless characters across the decades, I can confidently say that the upcoming final episodes of “Cobra Kai” have me on the edge of my seat. The emotional depth and intricate storytelling woven throughout this series has been nothing short of a rollercoaster ride, reminiscent of the ups and downs of a thrilling karate match.

Preparing to air its final five episodes in early 2023, stars Ralph Macchio and William Zabka have promised an exciting conclusion for “Cobra Kai” fans. At a recent panel on the Sony Pictures Entertainment lot, Macchio, Zabka, and the show’s executive producers teased that the climactic ending of Season 6 Episode 10 sets up a series of action-packed final episodes.

Macchio stated, “We’ve reached a point where we need to touch rock bottom before we can bounce back, and that’s about where we are now.” He’s thrilled about it. The setup suggests we’ll see a classic ’80s movie ending, one I feel we’ll discover, and then move on. It seems fitting that we’re preparing to bring ‘Cobra Kai’ to a close, or in other words, landing the plane.” This chapter appears to be wrapping up.

Season 6 was split into three segments, with the first batch of five episodes premiering in July and the second part dropping earlier this month. As Part 3 of Season 6 lands on Feb. 13, 2025, Zabka agreed that it was “the right time to end it and the right way to end it. [The producers] stick the landing in a way that’s unexpected, uplifting, and honest…It’s a great ending for everybody and we’re so thankful we had six seasons to get to tell the whole story.”

In the finale of “Cobra Kai” Season 6, a surprising turn of events unfolded – a sudden demise during a worldwide karate competition left spectators, including the series’ antagonists John Kreese and Terry Silver, utterly astounded.

Jon Hurwitz, an executive producer, shared that they aimed to keep things uncertain moving forward. Essentially, they’ve posed a question: what does this mean? We have numerous characters we’ve been tracking for years, and the tournament held significant importance to each one in various ways. Now, with only five episodes remaining, we wonder how they’ll cope, if the tournament will resume, and how these characters react to recent events.

Hurwitz clarified that the character’s demise served a purpose beyond creating shock, stating, “It was strategically planned to align with the trajectory of our characters and their future development as we reach the series’ conclusion.

In Episode 10, we witnessed an unprecedentedly large fight scene, a testament to the show’s relentless pursuit of outdoing itself. “The preparation was meticulous under the guidance of our director, Sherwin Shilati,” Heald commented. “In the writers’ room, we ensured that every punch, every kick, and even camera movement had a purpose. We can’t simply have an extra coming in to throw a punch without setting it up earlier in the series. Every small moment matters, not just the intense two-on-one battles.

The series has served as a reflection of the decades-long dynamic between Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence, a rivalry that sparked 40 years ago in “The Karate Kid.” Schlossberg explained that he, Heald, and Hurwitz have put significant effort into giving depth to all these characters. This includes reimagining antagonists by presenting them from new perspectives, offering fresh insights into their personalities.

Johnny Lawrence, who was once the main adversary in ‘The Karate Kid’, is now someone you’re cheering for,” he mentioned. “We delve deep into understanding all our characters, even those portrayed as villains. It’s incredibly engaging in our writers’ room, where we continuously discuss ways to increase tension while maintaining authenticity. In the final five episodes, we elevate the storyline significantly, but it will resonate deeply and realistically with viewers.

As “Cobra Kai” comes to a close, Zabka shared that revisiting his character from his younger days was an “unexpected pleasure.” He expressed that as an actor, getting to portray a character who is multi-dimensional, heartfelt, funny, and more, is what he aims for when taking on roles. “You want to touch people’s lives,” he said. “The fact that it’s connected to ‘Karate Kid,’ has deep themes, a devoted fan base, and everything else just makes the experience surreal.

Of course, Macchio won’t be saying goodbye to Daniel LaRusso just yet. Next year, you’ll find him bringing back the character alongside Jackie Chan in the movie “Karate Kid: Legends.

For over 40 years, I’ve trodden these streets in these shoes. Honesty and truth in character have always been my focus, something I constantly seek. I want to understand a character’s journey, be it donning costumes, applying makeup, or taking dramatic leaps – even if that means hitting another character like Johnny. If it advances the story, I’m all for it. However, what really matters is the destination – where does this journey end? That’s my comfort zone because we share the same objective. This shared goal exists because [the producers] genuinely care about these original stories and characters. It’s their deep affection that gives our performances depth and makes our storytelling compelling.
