As a die-hard Marvel fan who’s spent countless hours poring over comics and binge-watching movies since the early days of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, this deleted scene from Season 2 of “Loki” feels like a treasure trove unearthed from the depths of Asgard itself! The way Tom Hiddleston’s Loki casually drops names of familiar faces and some yet-to-be-seen characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is a testament to the rich tapestry that is this universe.
Throughout the Marvel Studios series “Loki” spanning two seasons, I’ve found myself on a journey, shedding my former role as a villain and embracing the hero within, which many of us had always suspected was there. Yet, my past indiscretions are perpetually lingering in my mind.
In an additional scene from Season 2, due for release in 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Loki reminisces about the numerous individuals who viewed him as a challenge, as he converses with his companion Mobius (Owen Wilson) over pieces of key lime pie.
I, Loki, reveal the allies of Thor in Asgard – Volstagg (Ray Stevenson), Hogun (Tadanobu Asano), and Fandral (Josh Dallas and Zachary Levi) – as well as Laufey, the Frost Giants’ king and my biological father, and Bor, the father of Odin, who served as my adoptive grandfather. I also mention Heimdall not once, but twice, for he was indeed a formidable figure!
From Earth, Loki lists Thor’s girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), her scientific colleague Erik Selvig (Stellan Skarsgard) and her intern Darcy Lewis (Kat Dennings). He also names S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and agent Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) — as well as Donald Blake, “who Thor pretends to be when he goes to Earth.”
In this list, Loki introduces two Marvel comic characters yet to appear in the MCU: one is Amora, famously known as Enchantress, an enchanting Asgardian adversary to Thor; the other is Absorbing Man, a former boxer named Carl Creel who was transformed into a villain by Loki after being given an elixir that allows him to change his body into whatever he touches.
Towards the conclusion, Loki mentions Hercules, a Greek semi-divine being who has been featured in Marvel comics since 1965. This character made his MCU entrance in the closing credits of “Thor: Love and Thunder,” released in 2022, portrayed by Brett Goldstein from “Ted Lasso.” In this scene, Hercules’ father, Zeus (Russell Crowe), instructs him to defeat Thor, following an incident where Thor struck Zeus with his own lightning bolt. As of now, Marvel Studios has not disclosed whether or when Hercules might reappear in the MCU. However, Loki hinted that this wasn’t the first time the Odin family had encountered troubles with Hercules.
“Hercules — another big guy,” Loki tells Mobius. “I was a big problem for him.”
Season 2 of “Loki” debuts on 4K UHD Blu-ray on Dec. 3.
