How to share your location on Instagram DMs

As a seasoned Instagram user with countless hours spent scrolling through reels and posts, I must admit that the latest update on their direct messaging feature has truly made my digital socializing more engaging than ever! The addition of over 300 new stickers, customizable nicknames, and most importantly, the live location sharing feature, has taken our virtual hangouts to a whole new level.

Instagram has been working to improve its messaging function, adding several fresh features, such as the ability to share your real-time location with your friends.

By November 2024, Instagram introduced an array of fresh updates for its direct messaging service. These updates included the addition of more than 300 new customizable stickers, as well as providing users with the opportunity to assign personalized nicknames to one another.

The third aspect enables you to share your real-time location with your friends directly via private messages on Instagram. It’s important to note that this feature is designed for personal communication, allowing you to share your location only within individual conversations or group chats.

Automatically, your shared live location will expire after an hour and won’t be transferable to other conversations. Moreover, you have the option to manually end the sharing of your live location whenever you wish.

How to share your live location in Instagram DMs

Here’s a straightforward method for letting your friends know your current location: Just take a moment to follow these easy guidelines and keep them updated on your exact whereabouts:

  1. Open Instagram and go to your DMs by pressing the button at the top right corner of your feed page
  2. Open the group chat where you want to share your location
  3. To share a live location, tap on the “+” button at the bottom of the conversation
  4. Tap on the “Location” option.
  5. Select “Share your location” at the bottom of the menu. Your location will be shared as a message in the chat.
  6. Tap View location below your message to see a larger map with your live location and the duration remaining.
  7. You can stop sharing your location by tapping “Stop sharing location.”
  8. To share a pinned location or a location by searching for an address, select the drop pin option or “Find a place” option from the Location menu.

No problem if you can’t locate the location-sharing feature on your app right away! Instagram hasn’t specified which countries will receive these new features yet, but they are gradually being made available globally. Ensure that your app is updated to catch the rollout in your region.
