As someone who grew up with Disney classics and has seen the magical transformation of their stories over the years, I am absolutely thrilled about the upcoming release of “Moana 2”. The success of the original film and its continued popularity on streaming platforms is a testament to its timeless appeal, and I can’t wait to see what new adventures await Moana and Maui in this sequel.
“Moana 2” is expected to make waves at the box office over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
In 4,200 North American cinemas, the follow-up to Disney’s popular musical “Moana” premieres this Wednesday. It is expected to earn between $135 million and $145 million in its first five days of release, potentially breaking records as the highest-grossing Thanksgiving weekend, surpassing the earnings of both 2019’s Disney sequel “Frozen II” ($125 million over five days) and 2013’s “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” ($109 million over five days).
The animated film ‘Moana’ is set to make waves on international cinema screens, with projections indicating an additional $100 million in earnings, bringing its total global gross to $235 million. With strong presales and positive buzz, ‘Moana’ appears poised to join the list of Disney’s 2024 theatrical hits, following the record-breaking successes of ‘Inside Out 2’ ($1.6 billion) and ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ ($1.3 billion). Theatres are particularly grateful for this anticipated success, as ‘Moana’ was initially planned as a TV series for Disney+ but was later transformed into a movie.
In 2016 during the extended Thanksgiving weekend, “Moana” debuted and earned $82 million at the box office for Disney. It went on to make a total of $680 million worldwide, but its popularity really took off on digital platforms like Disney+. Fast forward to 2023, seven years after its initial release in theaters, “Moana” was the most-watched movie of the year in the U.S., with a staggering 11.6 billion minutes viewed, according to Nielsen. This shows that the Polynesian adventure hasn’t lost any of its appeal since the first Trump administration. In fact, this is why the studio is working on a live-action remake of the original, set for release in 2026.
In the sequel, Dwayne Johnson and Auliʻi Cravalho reprise their voice roles as Maui, the tattooed demigod, and Moana, a brave heroine from Polynesia who is not a princess. The story takes them on a long voyage across the ocean to discover a secret island and lift a curse. Lin-Manuel Miranda, known for creating popular songs like “How Far I’ll Go” and “You’re Welcome” in the original movie, won’t be returning this time. Instead, the songwriting duties have been handed over to Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, a duo who created “The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical.
This year’s Thanksgiving season is expected to be particularly bustling at cinemas, thanks to the releases of “Wicked” and “Gladiator II.” The combination of “Ralph Breaks the Internet,” “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald,” and “Creed II” made 2018’s Thanksgiving box office the most successful ever, raking in a total of $315 million. However, post-pandemic Thanksgivings have been relatively quiet compared to previous years. The 2023 holiday season was one of the least profitable on record, with only $125 million earned in total. Leading the pack were Disney’s “Wish” and “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” the prequel to “The Hunger Games.
The movie adaptation of Act One from the popular Broadway show ‘Wicked,’ starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, has earned $129 million domestically and $178 million globally in its initial four days. After making a strong debut with $114 million, it’s projected to earn around $60 million over the standard weekend (a drop of about 50%) and at least $80 million for the full five days. With ‘Part Two,’ set to hit the big screen in 2025, audience interest is crucial as these two films have a combined production budget of $300 million, not counting the extensive marketing expenses.
Currently, “Gladiator II” has earned approximately $60.5 million within the U.S. and a staggering $225 million worldwide. The R-rated sequel to the 2000 film “Gladiator,” produced by Paramount, is expected to generate an additional $33 million in North American theaters over the standard weekend (a drop of around 44% from its initial $55.5 million opening). Furthermore, it’s projected to bring in another $45 million between Wednesday and Sunday. Boasting a star-studded cast that includes Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, and Denzel Washington, the epic sword-and-sandal movie has come with a hefty price tag of around $250 million to produce, along with an additional $100 million for promotion. To recoup its investment, this high-profile production needs to maintain its presence in the global box office market.
